    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

:) Hello all. I'm workin on my 1979 GS850G engine right now, doing a top end rebuild. There are two valve stem seals that will not come out. I'm using a valve stem seal removal tool that worked fine for all the other ones, but as I stated, these last two will not budge. Admittedly the removal tool is pretty cheap, spent about $17 on it. I'm wondering a couple things,

1. is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm trying to grip the seals with the tool and then I'm pulling, but the tool doesn't seem to grip these seals well at all, slips off when I pull.

2. Maybe the tool is the problem. Is there a specific tool that you guys use that seems to work super well?

The metal cased seals occasionally become very stubborn. If I strike one that won't come off any other way, I split the thin steel outer shell with a small screwdriver ground to a sharp chisel edge.

Just sit it on the shoulder of the seal case and tap with a small hammer. Once the shell is split it will lift off easily.

Thanks Greg. I used your method and it worked well with one of the remaining two stem seals. The other one though, holy moly! I really had to tear the ever lovin sh** out of it to get it out of there :eek-new:
In any event, they're all out now.
 
Be careful with any impact around the seals and guides. It doesn't take much to snap a guide. :oops:

Yeah Steve, thank you. I was also concerned about that. Seems to have worked though. Couple of very, very small nicks at the top of the guide. I'm not sure if I did that or not.
