A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

valve trouble--- keepers are hitting the bottom of the buckets

Looking back at the broken guide you would wonder how far can a valve be let in before the neck starts hitting the guides.

Now that you mention it, I think that's exactly what happened. They took .030" off !!!

By the time the valves and keepers were shortened enough to be able to shim the valves, there probably wasn't much left of the keepers.

The keepers were not short.. that's why they hit the buckets. The were taller than the valve stem. So the ridge on the inside of the keepers got beat up.
Like someone else noted... it's amazing I didn't drop a valve.

When building big valve heads, it is very important to maintain adequate clearance between the valves on the seats, so they won't hit each other. This is done by sinking the valves into the head, then unshrouding the area around the valve. This is very common mod on 2 valve GSs and Kaw KZs. Whoever worked on that head, simply did not know what they were doing. That head is not junk.

that makes sense to me... if it had big valves in there. I believe they are stock.
The more I fiddle with this, I'm thinking this bike had a lot more mods at one time, then was repaired with stock parts when he blew it up.
The guy I bought it from was very excited to tell me all about the special parts... many of them were not there when I took it apart.

My point is, just because the valves are sunk doesn't necessarly make the head junk.

On a side note. Never take your head to a "car" guy. Most are butchers and dont care. Some bike guys too. Do your research on anything that you have to pay money for and should save you time and money in the long run.
