Also, be sure the new pipe doesn't require longer (5mm?) bolts. Mine did ('79 GS1000E).
If the bolts are short then you'll easily strip the head threads trying to torque with the bolts only a few threads in.

Oh I'm not criticizing anything. I generally mention something if I think it should be looked at. I would expect the same thing back.
Exhaust bolts are generally 9 or 10 lb/ft torque. Don't over tighten and tighten uniformly.
Also, you mention one pipe not bluing up as much as the others and mentioning it may be a lean condition. Actually the "less blue" pipe suggests it's running closer to correct mixture than the other three. Blue means more heat than gold. More heat means a leaner mixture at that cylinder.

Thanks Keith, I understand about the lean mixture thing. When I had the carbs off, I made sure the air/fuel mixture screws were 1.5 turns out, but from my understanding, this adjustment won't help much in the upper RPM range, where the bike spends most of it's time. Do you think it would help to back them out on the "blue" pipes, or is a carb rejetting in my near future?

Well, if the bluing has been caused by just general running around town, that would be the pilot circuit with some overlap effect from the jet needles. So richer mixture screw settings would help in that case or until you're ready to re-jet (keeping lower speeds). Mixture screw settings will do next to nothing for 1/4 throttle and beyond.
I don't know what's been done to the bike other than I see pods and a pipe. I have a feeling you're lean.
That would mean a stage 3 jet kit is your best bet unless you have one that's not tuned correctly or you have separate jets that are too lean.
Most new pipe makers seem to use thinner chrome than in the old days. The pipes gold up as normal. But any bluing beyond just a VERY light shade mixed in with the gold suggests a lean mixture.

Very Nice. Sounds good too. Do your pod filters have enough oil ? There is also a K&N pre filter that may get your air / fuel mixture closer cause it does looks lean. Mine runs lean with just the airbox cover off.

I bought the pods off of eBay, and to be honest, didn't realize they needed "oiled"??? What do they take, 10W40?? :-D

I assume this is the oil you're talking about, will this work on all filters, or just designed for the K&N's??

What kind of filters did you buy? If they have foam in them, you need some UNI filter oil. If they appear to be cotton (like K&N), then the k&n stuff should be ok. Do you have any other mods on the bike? I find it hard to believe that just pipe and pods on a stock 1100 would run lean with stage 3 1150 carbs on it. Some chop tests are in order.

Did you clean the pipe off REAL good before you ran the bike? I mean like with some MEK or something? The bluing could also be a dirty pipe with oils, fingerprints, etc. on it. Mine turned gold instantly, because I didn't clean it good enough, not because it was lean. In fact it is set to run a bit rich. I used some Blue Away followed by pure wax. Once I got the pipes REAL clean, they just barely turn gold and only at the top.

Yes, I cleaned the pipes pretty good before I ran the bike. Not sure about the carbs, they were eBay specials, and I can only go with what the previous owner told me. I will play with the air fuel mixture to try and fatten up the mix, if that doesn't work, I will just go ahead and let a professional shop rejet them. I'm really good friends with a guy who owns a shop about a mile from my house, he's only worked on my V-Max so far, but he's already said he would love to get his hands on my Zuki!!!!! :-D

Hmmm. I did see where you had another models carbs on there, but didn't see any mention they had a stage 3 jet kit or any other kit info.
I didn't see the first time where you said the carbs seem close (by performance?). I hope it is. Trust the plug reads. Lean mixtures can make more power and fool you into thinking everything's fine.

I bought a set of carbs that came from an 85 GS1150E that was running a 4 into 1 with pods,

Sorry, I assumed the carbs were originally jetted for the mods when on the 1150. Even if they were /are stock, one wouldn't think they should run lean. But like you said, Keith, plug reads will tell all.

I don't know how the '85 1150 jetting compares to his 1100. I'm not sure if they're even the same MM bore. But I doubt the stock 1150 jetting would be richer enough to call it good. I could be wrong. As always...test.

Thanks for the help guys, I will get the carbs worked out, probably by next weekend! Supposed to be sunny and in the 70's most of the week here, need to get some riding time in on her!!!!

Tornado,

Didnt take long to change that Avatar. Nice ! The air inlet hole in my airbox is about as big as a quarter. Anything larger than that and Im running lean.

I had the same question you did about the gap, and Bruce answered it! funny, huh? oh and I ALSO had a problem getting them together! (I still haven't gotten them together) glad your dremmel worked for you

What kind of problems are you having, the same ones I did, or something different?

The second problem you mentioned; fitting the pipe onto the headers :)

Yea, it was a bear. By just "eyeballing" the pipes, it didn't even look that bad, but I mean to tell you, it just WOULD NOT slip into that hole!! I just got the old dremel out and clean up all around the edges, and it finally slipped in. I used some bearing grease to hold the new gaskets in, luckily, I didn't have any of them slip out during the tug of war with the pipes!!! You could probably get by with a file if you don't have a dremel handy, but like I said, I needed it for the can too! Isn't working on these old bikes fun!!! :-D

Yeah I was hesitant to dremmel mine because it really looks like it would make for a lot of dremmeling. I was going to try to find one of those pipe expansion cone deals... we'll see when I finally get to the point of putting it back on again ;)

It really didn't take alot of trimming, I think looks are deceiving! If it's off more than what you can shave with a file or dremel tool, I think you're going to be in some big trouble, and maybe even risk an exhaust leak! Pretty rediculous to pay 300 bucks for an exhaust, and they can't even make it right!!!
