Help, the wires that plug into the wiring harness from the voltage regulator are really getting hot. Its not the wires from the stator its the other wires that plug into the wiring harness. I bought the bike and the guy had cut out the connector right there where the voltage reg plugs in. I replaced the voltage reg and it gets warm like the other one did. I know form reading in the forum that these regulators get hot. If I replace it with an Electrex regulator will this cure the thing. :?:

What most people do is eliminate the plug altogether and solder the wires together, and run the stator wires direct to the reg/rect, making the 3rd lighting phase of the stator working all of the time.
also Make sure that you have a good ground running between the battery (-) and the reg/rec case (mounting bolt) adding an extra ground wire helps as the reg disapates excess voltage thru the ground circuit and if not properly grounded it can over heat. So check all of the connections first, then check battery voltage should be 12.6 volts turned off and 14-14.5 volts at 5K RPM.
If you are still having problems refer to the stator pages for detailed info. Also there is a sugestion in the tips forum about cooling the reg/rec

I am wondering whether a zener diode would be good somewhere in this GS circuit? I know my old Triumph used one to dissipate excess heat from the charging circuit.
Any ideas anyone?

Ok the previous owner had spiced in two wires that go back into the wiring harness. It seems like when the wires are hot the bike is running rough. When the wires are just warm the bike sits and purrs like a kitten. What gives here?

See if the wires are soldered or just twisted together. If they aren't soldered you should do it. Then use some heat shrink tubing for insulation.

Where was the Zener in the circuit.?????

Ok the wires where soldered together with shrink tubing on them. As soon as I replaced these wires with new splices and new connectors it quit getting hot. Now I've got another problem. What contols the lights under the seat in the same area? I lost my turn signals, dashlights, brake light, but as soon as I started to move some of these wires around they came back on.

For it to be all those lights check the fuse connections. It should be one of the 10 amp fuses if you have more than one. The signals are usually connected seperately from the rest of those lights but all share one fuse.

Billy I'll check the fuses today. I never thought about the fuse box. I'll spray it down with contact cleaner.
