I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Coil relay mod, good battery 12.9V, 12+ V at the coils, weak spark orange color just kind of sad looking, all plugs the same. New NGK caps, new plugs. Coils look to be orig so I'm thinking replacements are in order or could it be the wires?

Hi,

Have you taken resistance reading on the coils? Are they in spec?

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I have not and could not find anything on how to properly check it.

Best way to check them is to remove the 28 year old coils from your bike. Throw them in the trash and replace them with a set of green 3-ohm dyna coils with wires. Try the spark test again and when it goes, "crack crack crack" with the 30,000 volts of spark you will know that you did the right thing. Then take it for a ride and notice the difference! Dar

Basscliff, thank you. I have seen the light and willl check them tomorrow and post my findings.

I have seen a post saying you can replace the wires on the original coils that are epoxied in. Think I'd like to go that route if my coils check out good. Do I just chip away at the stuff till the wire pulls out, stick in the new wire & re-epoxy or is there a trick to it?

Coils both show 5 at the wires and 12.6K (measured by sticking the prongs through close to the coil, not through the boot) at the plug wires. I think this is a good sign they are OK. I got some new plug wire from NAPA but would like a bit of guidance as to how I replace the old wires as they are epoxied in. Do I just dremel it out, pull the old, stick in the new & re-epoxy or is there something I should know of before starting this?

Hi,

Yes, be very careful chipping and scraping away the old epoxy. Also be careful not to damage the spikes at the bottom of the wire holes in the coils. It has been done successfully. Take your time.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Thanks Basscliff, I'll be careful. Maybe take a pic or 2 of my progress

Progress so far, little deeper in than I thought but getting there....not sure how to post the pics but you can take a look in my album....

This way did not work

interesting method. Might be worth a try if it works out.

where can I find the new green coils guys? Price?

I did that to mine about 5 years ago, cut them open. Lasted about 6 months, a year. Then I had problems again, weak spark, backfiring, just quit running. Then I replaced them with the dyna green. Much better spark. NO problems
What type of wire did you use?

I was able to dremel deep enough to get the shorter wire out but not the deep side, side cutting is the way to go to expose the pin and be sure the wire is connected right just need to be careful not to damage or cut off the pin, that Water Weld stuff really seams to hold tight and cures solid, we'll see how it holds up to the vibrations and heat.

Napa had some Belden High Temp wire that I used, spark is much better and helps it run better but I am still having issues. Cost was $3.90 for 10' of wire and 4.99 for the epoxy and hour or two of time.

I'll get the Dyna's when I have the funds, just a little lean right now and do not want to lay out the $150 they cost. Unless someone knows where to get a sweet deal on them.

I need to re-seal the air box, as I saw my last seal job is coming apart. Still having issues when I go past 1/4 throttle. May be a carb issue, have to check which circuit that is. Just trying to eliminate 1 problem at a time.
