    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

It seems I didn't really make sure my Campbell Hausfeld spray gun was in tip top shape before spraying the clear;






Sags,runs and air bubbles everywhere.When I took the gun apart it seems the O ring on the front fixture was bad.the bit the O ring was on wasn't tight either.Before taking it apart I wasn't getting good atomization,afterwards it was looking MUCH better.

This sidecover did turn out nice.
Lesson to be learned.CHECK THE EQUIPMENT BEFORE YOU DO STUFF:eek:

1000 grit wet by hand and than get a new sprayer.. it might fix it.
 
Did you spray outside? Looks like you picked up some "debris" on some pieces.
 
"If you can't fix it, feature it!!"

It takes a special touch to get that much orange peel and to do it so evenly.

Might be salvagable with some wetsanding, except maybe for the air bubbles...

Yes they can.. and 'can' is the key word. But more often than not, you need to work with and on them to get some semblance of a proper spray pattern. Plus they tend to be air hogs. Combine that with a small CFM compressor? boy, that 'could' be a recipe for disaster.

that is a shame after all that hard work.
 
I had to convert my garage to a mini cross draft spray booth to paint my buddies bike. We hung heavy canvas tarps. On the back side put 3 box fans with hepa filter material tapped to the backs and ran them on low. Had to wet down everything with the garden hose before any paint and a again before the clear. It was a lot of work but it was better than paying a paint shop top dollar to do it. From the experience in the auto body schooling that I went through for two years and the body shops that I have worked in I don't think wet sanding to smooth the clear out will do much if you war looking for a mirror finish. But consider even factory paint jobs today have a good amount of orange peel, its done that way so the base doesn't fade out as fast if at all.
 
OK it is not the best gun but it is better than this.

It's the same gun that shot this.I think I broke it down and didn't reassemble it right.We should all know how important good O rings are to.Don't forget I am a novice at this stuff.A new gun just ain't going to happen,why do you think I was asking about 2K can coverage http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=209101 ?The way it was the gun was just throwing tons of clear at the pieces.Will be wet sanding it and re-clearing next weekend,most of what looked like bubbles are gone.It's just a temporary set back.
 
Hate to disagree with rusty, but I have done a fine job with a $15 HF gun. The trick is that the nozzle is very small iirc 0.7, so you go over so many times it will not run and I never recal it sputtering. Also key is a pressure regulator at the gun (I also have a gauge there) and make sure the is no water in the compressor.

I probably posted which gun. It is a hvlp touch up gun with purple handle.
 
Jim you can do a good job with a 'el cheepo IF it's working correctly, As I recall you had to hold the lid in place on your HF gun with rubber bands. Just think of all the work going down the drain if that lid came off or leaked when you were shooting clear on top of a fuel tank? Way too much work going down the drain to correct if that happened in my opinion.

Greg, No one ever said you need to buy a new gun. There are plenty of good used professional guns out there for sale for under $50 as there are good off brand ones for not much more. I paid somewhere around $68 for my Astro EVO when I bought it new. A person can buy a NEW Sharpe SFG-98 HVLP (an older model) on Ebay for under a hundred bucks which will do a fantastic job putting down paint. It uses a bit of air at 11 cfm or so, but even with a 1.5 tip powered by my old 1 hp twin cylinder compressor, it did a nice job on the Honda's body work if you let the compressor recover in between sessions.

As with most good guns, when you are done spraying, all you need to do is run some thinners through it, unscrew the air cap, scrub it and the nozzle, put it back together and it will be ready to shoot the next time. No worrying about leaky packing's, or a spray pattern that shoots lopsided. No spitting, dripping from the cup, or wondering if it's going to spray the same way as it did the last time you used it.

They don't have to be expensive, just good. :)

Yep, I have used the same gun on six or seven bikes now. They are not perfect, but none of the flaws were the gun, they were me taping it poorly or a fly's leg getting in it or things like that. Overall it's great for the price.
 
Dale there are 2 used guns listed on UsedVic,one's a CH gun that might be better but I somehow doubt it. http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/Spray-Gun_19996057 other ones even more vague http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/Air-tools_19995007 and missing stuff to:eek: Oppps found a third one http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/Jet-Gravity-Feed-Spray-Gun_19779638 and $80 is pie in the sky now.Even set up badly pattern has never been my guns problem.
Just a note I drained the compressor tank and water separator.Being on the wet coast I needed to.
 
I'm with Dale on getting a decent gun. Paint is expensive, and it takes a lot of time to prep the parts for paint. Spending a few bucks on a nice gun is not asking that much when you consider what's involved.

EDIT: Do NOT buy the POS Campbell Hausefeld gun. It's junk.

EDIT 2: Water in the air tank is a REAL problem. I have two different water separators on my compressor and water still gets through. You need to knock down as much water as possible at the tank, AND use a small filter at the gun as well.

Both those guns are no ship to Canada:( Not like we have the $$ anyway:(I'm sticking with the gun I have so you all can stop posting deals.Trying to get this bike on the road for the end of the month.Don't have time or $$ to get a "better" gun.

Greg, if you choose to work with the gun you already have, good on you! There's nothing wrong with that if it works just fine. Someday, maybe, when the money allows, you may want to upgrade to something better. Who knows what the future will bring.

Do what your pay check allows you... I do. Why do you think I'm rebuilding my trailer instead of buying a new one? I certainly isn't because I'm flush with cash.
 
So I do have one question,how long should I wait before I sand this down?Really wish a better gun was an option but it just isn't.
