    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Yeah, if I could get the screws out, I have broke an impact driver bit trying. I can't even get the long screws out to take it apart. :confused:
 
Is the drain hole plugged in your starter gallery? It sounds like the starter has been sitting in water.

Anywho, motors are extremely simple mechanically. If you can get the screws out (try some penetrating oil on the thread area) I'd bet you can clean it up, grease it, and use it again.

No, the drain hole is not plugged up, and the motor is not exactly seazed up. I think that it might be the brushes that are binding it up. I think they are probably pretty worn to where the spring is not putting enough pressure on them. I can turn it but it will bind up after a while. I think it would be fine if I could get the screws out. But one of them is bugered up pretty good. Maybe I could bring it to a machine shop just to loosen the screws up.
 
Well, I just checked again, and there is 12V going to the starter, so relay is ok. But it just won't spin, but yet spins freely when turned by hand. I guess it is either the brushes, are the motor is shot. The terminal does get a little warm after awhile.

Rode to Wally world this morning and everything was fine.
'Bout two hours later went out and hit the button, just got the click.:mad:
I've already checked the battery and shorted the starter post, but no turning.

If it will spin by hand it's probably the brushes. You still need to get it apart so you can clean up the armature and it would be nice to grease those bushings.

That's not good! I won't know of course until after I get it apart. I am hoping it is just bad brushes. This afternoon, I am going to bring it over to someone at work in the machine shop.

Don, I managed to get mine apart, but not without snapping one of the screws first. There is a guy at work who is going to try and easy out it for me. But if he can't fix it, sure I would take one from you. I'll let you know. I guess mine had some broken pieces of the brushes lodged in there. I cleaned it up, and it turns smoothly now. Amazingly enough, there is still a lot of the brush material left. I ordered new brushes as a precautinary measure anyways, when I ordered the starter clutch.
 
Ok, I think I might be able to re-use my starter if my friend at work can get the broken screw out. Where can I find these longs screws, anyone know? Also, I have ordered a new starter clutch, and the puller. So the beast will be back on the road when ever this stuff comes in.

bikebandit and mrcycles both have the bolts.
Brace yourself.... they are $9.79 each.:eek:
 
heesh....well, Slip, should you ever decide to sell that old girl, you just let me know. I will cart my white Irish arse down to NC to pick it up :D
 
Slip, I bought my bike 2 years ago for about $1000. In those 2 plus years I have put $3100 replacing basically everything that was from 28 years ago on my bike. When I first bought my bike, I had no idea what floats were or how anything else worked. But little by little, frustration and curse words, to wondering if my bike will ever start due to a problem or many problems, I have done everything myself. Just reading your thread kinda bugged me because you want to give up and not spend money into it. Just hang in there and ask as many questions that you have because these guys on here are top notch on knowledge about these bikes and will gladly help you on your journey of getting your bike running. Hope this helps.

No your right Johnny K. It is in fact a 31 year old bike! I was just a little frustrated the other day. I ordered all the parts that I need to get her back on the road, and they will be here soon.

And CafeKid, sorry, I am not giving up on the old girl just yet. Because I know, basically, she is pretty sound. And I have a lot of time invested, and I am beginning to know her on a more deeper level. :D
