    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Were is the rectifier on my gs1150 ?

I have a 84 gs1150es and have been having a charging problem. " Hard to believe" right? I read through the "Stator Papers" posted on this site and they seem to be helpful but when I refered to 2 different manuals that I have for my bike they said the rectifier was located on the L.H. side of the bike right next to the fuse panel? Well on my bike the fuse panel is on the R.H. side? and no rectifier anywhere to be found ? I double checked this against my buddys 85 1150E - and its the same way? My manual is a Suzuki 1150 shop manual?
Any way im trying to locate the rectifier in hopes of testing it. Does anyone have any suggestions? When I hook up an volt meter to the bike the Voltage drops when started, the papers say it should go up to about 14 -15, mine goes down quick! The bike runs until the battery is drained.
I had the battery tested and it was good.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
 
Its on the left hand side behind the side panel. its mounted inside the black plate you are looking at. (between the black plate and the battery) good luck................................skip
 
Pull side panels off & look for a finned aluminum box with 3 yellow,1 red & 1 black wire. May be under batt box also. Trace wires out of stator till you find where they plug into harnes. you want to see if they have overheated & melted. Could be a sign that stator is going to be bad also.

I have located the rectifier and tested it per the stator papers, It appears to be bad! one of the yellow leads spikes the meter when tested at the rectifier.
I bet the rectifier is going to be salty !! My local bike shop already gets an arm and a leg for the old zuki parts !
 
swap it with a honda unit.. much cheeper and a heck of a lot more reliable.
Takes a little extra time but well worth it... Slopoke should post a response to this.

Do you have the specifics on which Honda rectifier I would use?
 
Check in the tips and tricks. Use Honda 78-82 450/500/650 models
Except for the connector it will most likely look exactly like your old one.
 
Hey Guys,
My buddy had an old rectifier from a Kawasaki laying around and though I should give it a try. I have NO idea what year or model this rectifier was from but the heat sinks were nearly the exact size as the one from my 1150. The electronics in the back seemed a little smaller but the wires were all the same with the exception of an extra brown wire on the Kaw's rectifier ? I hooked it up and it seems to working fine, I'm getting around 12.9 - 13.8 volts when the bike is running.
Does any body know if this is a bad application? Do I risk damaging the other components in my charging system? or will it just smoke the rectifier?
Any input would be appreciated.

It should work fine. Since our electrical systems do not have high output alternators. Almost any reg/rect will work if it is the same physical size and for a 3 phase alternator. The Honda reg bolts in the original location/holes
