    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What Harley Muffs?

I am going to attempt to get some Harley mufflers from the dealer (FOC I hope) for my 787 GS1000E. What model of bike's mufflers should I ask for? The FLTs have one on each side but appear bigger, while the Sportsters and others are both on the same side but smaller (which I prefer). However, I am more concerned with compatitbility with the diameter of the stock headers than overall muffler size.

Also, I have a set of the original Vetter hard bags, would I be better off to go with the longer mufflers to accomodate the bags?

I wish I knew which model these came off of but I don't. They are about 2 feet long. I did have another set that were shorter but I don't think they would've looked as good. I'm going to email you a picture of some that are similar to what I had. Maybe you could print it and bring it with you to show them. Pictures might be helpfull at a Harley shop!:-D

The Sporty cans have a crossover, what is done there? Is it cut off and sealed and bypassed completey or do you bring the stock pipe in somehow?

Road King pipes and the like don't have the crossover, but are bigger.

Are there any clearance issues with either type of pipe with the centerstand, pegs, frame, etc.?

Will I have to have the exhaust off for the muffler install? Do they just attach with a standard muffler clamp?

Sorry for so many quesstions. I'll have to take these in to a muffler shop for installation and don't want any surprises. This bike gives me enough of those.

a) Some people leave the crossover pipes on and weld them shut. I had the pipes cut right at the crossover.
b) I did have an issue with the center stand not going all the way back up. All I needed to do was bend the kick down part about an inch and half so that it cleared the new muffler.
c) Mine was done on the bike. He cut the old mufflers off right at the collector and welded the new muffler to the collector. He also cut off the mounts from the stock mufflers and welded them on to the new ones to mount in the same place. He did have to tack weld part of the shields on which didn't bother me as it covered the weld joint.

I got some off of an FLH and they are way to big (diameter and length), they look fugly. I'm gonna be on the lookout for some sporty muffs or some JC Whitney cheapo's.
 
Take whatever the dealer will give you. They will most likely be off of a Dyna or a Softail, since that's what most of these "loud pipes save lives" sheep buy. These have fittings for a crossover pipe that you will have to plug. I welded in washers on mine, but small automotive freeze plugs should work well. I was able to weld the mufflers on in a way that lined two of the threaded mounting holes with two of the mounting holes on my bike. The inside diameter was a perfect slip fit over my original pipes.
 
Hey, Steve, are those cans off a sportster? Are they in clean enough condition to be black chromed when you got them from the Harley dealer?

I'm not sure what model they are from. I got them from someone who got them from HD and he didn't know what they were from.

They were new so, yes very clean.

Steve, you said yours look just like mine, which are for a Softail. Nowadays, the Sportster mufflers look to be the same as for the other H-D models. In any case, the model they're for is on the muffler itself.

I'll check that when I get home. There is writings on the mufller but I never really looked at it. I'll let you know what I find.
