    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

G'day all,
Can anyone identify the electrical part in the attached photo? Can't find it on any of my GS wiring diagrams in the shed here, so wondering if the wiring loom I'm dealing with is from some mid-80's Suzuki??
As you can see the thing is basically a black plastic box which is connected to the loom by no less than 17 wires!! 9 are via one block connector, and 8 via the second.
I know it's not the indicator auto-cancelling unit... but I can't think what else it might be? Some sort of control module for cooling fans for a water-cooled donk?

Next question... Can you (or anyone on here) direct me to a wiring diagram that incorporates one of these things?

I don't know what model of bike I'm dealing with here... it's a real bitsa, with ZX6 wheels and forks, GS1100 motor, after-market instrument pod, and the old loom in the old Suzuki frame. Can't identify what year or model this is, as the compliance frame on the steering head has long disappeared...
 
have a look for the gs1100 year 1982 points to this part maybe you can find the diagram your after
 
HEADLIGHT relay!!!! Try turn signal flasher ( relay ). head lgiht is hard wired direct from the ignition switch, no relay for it as I know of.
 
It is actually a headlight relay and, as Harry said, a 1982 GS(X) 1100 wiring diagram might help you.
 
Alpha sports parts cross reference said something about warning relay so I took that to mean turn signals. Does it ALSO maybe operate the turn signals or was i reading the parts description wrong???
 
G'day gents,
OK, finally found it in the diagram of one of my manuals (namely the Haynes manual for "Suzuki GSX/GS1000, 1100 & 1150 4-valve Fours, 1979 to 1988). There's a supplementary section which has a couple of wiring diagrams in it, an in these diagrams the offending black box is termed a "Monitor Unit". Well that could be just about any-bl**dy-thing!!
Helpfully, the supplement says:
... the ignition system is now advanced electronically, rather than by the mechanical advance/retard unit fitted previously... A monitoring system is incorporated in the instrument panel to warn the rider of headlamp, tail lamp or brake lamp bulb failure, low battery electrolyte level, low oil pressure, and whether the side stand has been retracted.

Further on in the supplement we read,
The various warning lamps mounted in the instrument panel are controlled by a monitor unit situated behind the right-hand side panel...

... and goes on to detail the functions. Sounds to me like Suzuki were getting too smart for themselves... I mean, what will monitor the Monitor Unit! :D

Now I want to figure out if I can somehow bypass this unit. Maybe I can just unplug it... but that would be too easy, I suspect. :rolleyes:

The part number comes back to 1100s and 1150s..not any of the bikes in your signature. What bike are you talking about here?


Edit..My bad Saw Katana and didnt pick up on the 1100...I will sit on my hands till I actually have a FULL cup of coffee in me. You can go to alpha sports and type in any found part numbers and hit the search site and it will bring up a list of bikes that part number cross references for.

Not completely sure Chuck, but it looks like the feed for the warning lights on the dash run through that component. The turn signal relay is separate.
 
If you bypass it you cant be "warned"!! Is there a warning about not being able to be warned?? LOL

Yeah, that's it... part #28 in the diagram above. I think I'll just leave it plugged in for the time-being, and see how I go trying to figure out the rest of the wiring. I have to wire in a new set of headlights, a new ignition lock, and a new (aftermarket) instrument panel. Wish me luck!

I agree -- it's definitely a case of someone at Hamamatsu trying too hard!

"Check panel control unit". Any wiring diagram for the GSX1100EZ will show you how it's plumbed in. Good luck.

The earlier 1100's had the electronics for the Check Panel built into the guages unit just under the picture of the bike panel (Check Panel). It had functions such as indicating if any bulb was blown, the level of the battery acid and the level of the brake fluid, oil pressure etc. If any failed, a light glowed in the location of the fault on the picture of the bike.
The later models had a separate control unit for that, which is what you have.
Some of the alarm indications are just simple triggers, but the bulb checking part is a bit more complex and has the power feed wire going in and then out of the box. If there is no current flowing then the electronic circuit switched the warning indicator on. You may need to bridge some of those wires if you just unplug the unit.
