    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What RMP do you guys have your bikes idling at?

I have always wondered this, when your bike is warmed up and idling, how many RMPs do you have it set at? On my 1000 I set the idle to about 1000 which guarantees that my clutch basket doesn't rattle. On my 550 its at about 800 RMP. Is there a generally accepted setting? Both bikes are stock except the 550 has Mac 4 in 2 pipes. Thanks
 
I have my 78 gs550e set at about 1200 rpm's. I think 1100 is spec.
 
I cannot do more than guess how these guys get the low numbers. My 1100's do NOT want to idle smoothly under 1300, and usually sit at 1400.
 
I am with Ron, I never owned a steet bike that idled correctly at under 1100-1200 rpm. My GS1000 sounds like it is self destructing at 1000 rpm or less and my KZ550 I am convinced IS self destructing at under 1g.

I keep the GS1000 right about 1200-1300 and the KZ550 at least at 1400 or more.

My XJ650LJ may have been the exception as it always idled right at 1050 almost perfectly all the time. Never more, never less.
 
1200 rpm on my 750 and 1150. The 1150 has a pronounced cam lope at 1200 rpm.

Spec on my 1983 GS750ES is 1100 rpm, and that what it's set at (and idles smoothly :D ).

Good to know I'm not crazy. I thought there was something wrong with my carbs (still) when it runs like poop below 1300 RPMs.

Also, I understand it's pretty normal for these machines to be quite cold-blooded? Makes me sort of wish I had an idle adjustment knob near the handlebars..
 
Idle? Who cares about idle? Oh, I almost forgot, I'm on a website concerning Suzuki GS motorcycles, not GT! :oops: Yes, my GS750 purrs like a kitten at about 1200rpm. I think my 1100 may need a slightly higher idle, maybe not. I'm still fiddling with the carbs.

It was really nice to get back on the GS after riding the GT all winter. A smooth bike that idles! Lots of torque! Very quick! It doesn't wheelie like the GT does, but I can lean the GS over alot farther in the corners, as the "fear factor" kicks in with the GT. I swear the GT has the stock front tire on it! 8O
 
Mine will idle around 1000. How low it idles and how smoothly depends greatly on if the carbs are perfectly in sync.
 
Manual for the GS550 (8 valve) says 2-3K rpm. Strange but true. Mine purrs at 2200 fully warm.

What year is that spec for (2-3000 rpm) for the 550? Are you sure that idle speed isn't for when you're doing something special to the bike?

Just sounds really high to me, as my 78 gs550e calls for 1100.
 
Hi, guys. Mine's a 1980 but I believe this is true for all 550s from '77 to '85. Bike seems fine with it.
 
Well I believe you Pete if you say so but I know my 650 and my 550 both idle just like any large bore. If I idled any of my bikes at 2k plus it would give one hell of a clunk when dropping it into 1st gear.
 
Now that I have my carbs all sorted out and the new intake boots and o-rings my 81 550T idles perfectly at 850 rpm.... Once its warmed up that is :)
