what the.... check this out...

I pulled the motor this weekend and started poking around.
I had noticed this but didn't know that there was actually a couple little holes and water was going into the motor
What would cause this?

the cam shaft looks ok but it's covered in rust on that side...
do you guys think I can just clean that up and run it?

Also the tach gear chewed the other camshaft... I don't plan on running a tach so hopefully it won't matter much...

Looks to me like some amateur welder tried to repair it. I don't know about that camshaft... try cleaning it up but it doesn't look very promising.

I'd say that the cam is past it with that amount of rust on it. You'll need a new rocker cover mind.

Check the valve guide on the rusted side of the cam to see if any damage is there too. You could be looking at a second hand head if the damage is too bad.

my plan was to tear down everything anyway...
I had hoped to clean up or re-work and use the bigger components (camshafts etc) and replace the smaller (read cheaper) parts...
we'll see what happens...

Either a new valve cover is in order or if you're a magician at alloy repair you can probably clean that repair up and make it solid.

You can try cleaning up that cam lobe, but you'll need to be ultra careful with the hardened surface (pretty sure it's hardened anyway) so you don't take any material off and so it doesn't go out of shape or spec.

As for the tach., suit yourself as the drive on there only drives the tach. and nothing else.

Do what Bccap says and follow BassCliff's guide, you just need a Photobucket account or similar.

You are going to have to remove the cam caps, camshaft, and valve bucket/shim, and assess the damage. Doesn't look good. Valve cover should be replaced for sure, and maybe the head and cam as well. Good news is that parts are readily available on ebay for good prices. Good luck

replace replace replace. Looks like it has moisture in it for some time. I'd replace that cam and valve cover. I'd be tempted top look at the bottom end as well since all that moisture had to go somewhere, like down the oil tubes and into the sump.

...and valve bucket, and shim, and maybe even the cylinder head if the aluminum on the cam journal is eaten away by corrosion.
