    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey guys , I have mostly been a lurker here the past couple years. I have been collecting parts to get my 83 1100es that I bought new in 83 back on the road. It has been sitting inside since about 1993. i have a bunch of other bikes but this one was always one of my favorites and figured its time for it to live again. It has about 40,000 miles on it. I have Wiesco 1166 kit and block has been sent for boring. Head sent off to APE a couple weeks ago for valve job , port and springs. 348 Web cams, RS36 carbs. My question at this point is what do you experts think I should do with the crank. I was thinking about sending it off to Falicon for their supercrank service but would this just be a waste of money? It's an 83 so crank is already welded. Roller crank so no balancing ? So they pull apart knife edge , polish , index and reweld?
I have heard the bearings last forever if they haven't seen dirt or metal but at 40K miles I hate for the crank to be the weak link. I will have more $$ into this than I paid for the bike in 83 and it's all apart now and want to do it right but again don't want to waste money if it's not necessary. It was a pretty smooth good running bike when I parked it . What do you experts think ?
 
Do NOT send the crank to Falicon!!! Send it to Stan Gardner in Maine ir John Pearson in Ohio. Which ever is closer to you, other than Falicon, is the one to send it to. Those 2 do GREAT work & they Are HONEST, with fair prices. Falicon, not so much. I build LOTS of GS engines & those are the 2 that get ALL of my crank work! Ray.

It all depends on what you want to do with it, how many miles on it, what kind of shape it's in now, & how much power you are looking to make. Ray.
 
why dont you recommend falion Ray? just out of curiousity, since a respected busa guy I know has recommended them before. I know you've got a lot of knowhow and experience, so I'm just curious on why you say not to.

falicon is the only one who does insert bearing cranks.
the press pin cranks...you have choices and a lot of people choose anyone except falicon because of there pricing and some things that have happened in the past.
i have seen pro racers cranks come back from them cut in 2 and 3 pieces with a chop saw..
falicon said they couldn't be rebuilt and they took it upon them selfs to make sure of that.:eek:

even though that has nothing to do with a GS1100 crank:)

I once sent them (Falicon) a BRAND NEW 83 GS1100 crank to have Supercranked. I called them to make sure it was received & they said someone would call me to tell me what it needed once they disassembled it. 3 days later they call me back & tell me the bearings were ALL bad & the rods were stretched out of spec! This was a BRAND NEW crank, from SUZUKI that I opened the box on myself before I shipped it to them! I told the guy that called me it was a NEW crank & he was being told a story to by someone. He IMMEDIATELY started back pedaling & put me on hold. When he came back he told me that the tech would have to get back to me later. The next day I got a call back saying that it was a "new" tech that was "mistaken". I told them mistakes happen & to build the crank & send it back to me. 2 days later I called & asked for the shop supervisor. When I got him on the phone I asked how long his newest tech had been there & he said all his guys had been there at least 2 years & he didn't have any NEW techs. I have NOT trusted them since!!! I TRUST Stan Gardner & John Pearson! Ray.

NOT true Terry! Marine Crankshafts out here in SUNNY southern California does them also & does better work on them than Falicon in my opinion! They also build custom billet cranks! Ray.
 
thats a pretty damned good reason not to trust falicon. what it sounds to me like, is someone is lazy and simply didnt want to do the work on the crank.
 
Thanks for the input. I talked to John Pearson this morning and will be sending my crank off to him. I knew Falicon was probably on the high end for what I needed. I guess my concern was if I really needed to do anything at all as it was still working well but did have 40 k miles and had been sitting for 18 years. So after talking to John I think new rod bearings at a minimum will give me peace of mind that I won't have to be back into the lower end for awhile.
 
you are a very wise man for calling john!
if your rods are not stepped new rod bearings will make for a very nice crank rebuild.

Yup, me too. With inner hub and plates and lock-up and 40MM CV carbs too. I have too much.

I will second a good opinion on John Pearson. Just got my block back from him after he decked it and wired it as well as some pistons and a clutch basket. Good guy real straight shooter and very helpful and forthcoming with advise.
