A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I don't travel too far but still would like to carry a small tool kit for any roadside repairs. What simple tools and/or spare parts would anyone recommend to have with them for short (200 miles or less) trips?

Thanks for your thoughts!

see if you can find an OE tool kit for your bike. They come up on ebay usually for about $40.

They're still available new for some models. This was discusssed pretty throroughly a year or two ago. I can't remember exactly the name of the thread, but it was similar enough to this that I thought someone had resurrected it. If you can find that thread, you'll get a ton of great ideas.

just this....:p

Add a flash light and set of needle nose vice grips; that's my kit.

If I am taking the Wing, the only "tool" I need is a credit card for more gas.

If I am taking the GS, the kit varies depending on whether I am going by myself, going with others, or if there is a chase vehicle capable of carrying THE toolbox.

Last time I broke down (not three weeks ago) my tool kit consisted of an entire, very nice 1982 GS850L :D

I would just copy and paste from the old thread, but I'm too lazy to look for it. Here's some of it:
A full set of metric combo wrenches (ratcheting and standard) 9mm-17mm, full set of 3/8 and 1/4 sockets, metric and sae with ratchets and extensions (Craftsman), screwdrivers, feeler gauge, allen wrenches, tire repair kit, 12 volt compressor, pretty much almost anything I need to do repairs on the road just short of an overhaul.:D

I like to bring tie wire. It doesn't get used that often, but its cheap and way better than duct tape to me.

Under my seat is a pouch with four wrenches - 10,12,13,14mmk, also a convertible philips/slotted screwdriver, plug wrench, pair of pliers, a couple of zip ties, baling wire, picture frame wire. Along with that rides an OE tire gauge. In the tail section I carry a bungee net, and a bag with spare H4, tail and signal bulbs, spare fuses, and a rag. In my tail bag, which I almost always carry, there is a swiss type army knife and a few first aid items. Just for giggles I threw in this 'survival kit in a sardine can' that I have no idea where it came from :p.
