wheel size/ tire size ?

first timer

Forum Sage
Hey guys, i just picked up a brand new lester rear wheel to match my lester front wheel for the 1k. This new lester is a 16x3.00. the 3.00 is width right?

Cause the paper work that came with it was making a big deal about it being wider, and low and behold the oem rear is 2.50. So my question to you knowledgeable folks.... what size rear tire can I get for this rim? I am running a 1100 alum swing out back so its has more clearance. What are my tire options? I tried looking at Dunlop?s tire conversation chart but they don't really cover it. I also I have a lester 19x2.15 on front is that the same as oem or is that wider as well? What would you recommend there, a 90/100?

thanks,
-ryan

Yes, 3.00 is the width.

Pirelli's tire catalog for Sport Touring tires (Sport Demon) has the following recommendations for your rim sizes:

The 16x3.00 rear rim can use a 130/90-16 tire. This is the standard rim width for this tire. The largest tire listed for the 3.00 rim is the 150/80-16, which has a usage range of 3.00 to 4.25 inch rims. The 150/80-16 tire can be as wide as 6.1 inches, and may not fit. Also, it might adversely affect handling.

I don't know the stock front rim size for your bike, but the 19x2.15 rim can use a 100/90-19 front tire. The standard rim width for this tire is 2.5 inches, but it can be fitted to rims from 2.15 to 2.75 inches.

half inch wider rim and larger tire/tyre could cause it to rub against the swing arm.
Remember to check for clearance

so can i run the 150 tire? or will it be pitched on the rim? i hit the twistys hard and use all my tire so i don't want any negative handleing for deformed tires.

the swing arm should have enough clearance but the brake arm may get a little tricky.

Ryan,

If you prefer looks over handling go wider. If you prefer handling over looks go narrower. I once had a 140-80 on my 1100E and it slowed the handling down significantly. I like the 130-90 much better. I even tried a 120-90 which quickened the steering up even more but I like the compromise between contact patch and handling that the 130 gives. The stock wheels on my 1100 are 1.85 front and 2.50 rear. The wider wheels will flatten out a given size tire more than the stock wheels which will result in a slightly larger contact patch, less lean angle, and slightly slower handling.

Thanks,
Joe
