    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

where should i start looking? flasher, gas guage and oil temp gauge are dead.

im guessing a bad reg/rec fried all of this stuff and im trying to get it back up to snuff for a state inspection.

its an 85' GS700E. 17k

reg/rec fried last fall with the previous owner. i bought it not running. replaced battery with new and replaced reg/rec with one off of a mid-80's honda CX500. soldered all connections, runs, revs and charges fine.

all the bulbs in the rear end were blown.all bulbs in the front were ok (not to say the PO didnt replace them) the fuses in the fuse box are all good. (not to say they didnt blow and replaced by the PO).

i replaced ALL light bulbs with new and replaced stock (i think) 2-blade flasher with a 3 blade electronic flasher (my harness has 3-blade setup) but still doesnt work. where should i look? headlamp, front running lights, tail light and brake light all work. but none of my turn sigs work.

i used the search feature to see what i could find the guages not working. didnt see much on the temp guage but i saw a few right ups on the gas guage issue. i will inspect the connections to my pick up in the tank.

where should i be trouble shooting?

the easiest would be to pick up a wiring diagram for your bike and start there

re the blinkers, maybe the easiest is to pick up the original used part as the aftermarket you have may not be compatible
it would pay to check all the wires in the blinker circuit for continuity - they may have been fried too
blinkers also wont work if ANY of the grounds is bad, so check those (you do however get the other one to stay on all the time)

check all other wires that go to/from the stuff that doesnt work

gas gauge sometimes doesnt work for other reasons so may be unrelated (as you already found out)

your problem may have been bigger than just a faulty rr as it's only a fuse that should have blown not all the other stuff you mention

Erm... What state inspection? I've had mine in Ohio for a couple years now, and the only inspection was the cursory examination at the tag office making sure the VIN matched when I brought it down from NY.

Guys,
I have had my old GS850 suprised me at the most inoportune of time leave me without lights fuses good bulbs good....I checked everything...I thought...
Until i really looked at the fuse box....the fuse holders had over the years corroded enough to lose connection....from there it is a hard read on those wiring diagrams unless you get it blown up.....good luck

Those bikes had multiple fuses I would start there. If the fuses are good then it's down to tracing wires in a wiring diagram.
 
well, i havent gotten my liscence yet and they are going to do an inspection of the bike when i go to take the test. my 5-fuse fuseblock looks fine, no corosion or bad fuses. oh well... thanks all.

the fusebox needs an inspection with a voltmeter, sometimes everything looks good but you dont get any voltage at the other side of the fuse
 
all fuses show 12.4v (bike off) on both sides of the fuse... i guess i will start systematically hunting down the grounds to the lights and checking them. i tried to unscrew the turn sig/highbeam module off of my driver side handlebar today to inspect the switch itself but those screws are in soopatight! i hit em with some PB blaster and left. thanks all.

You'll have to hit 'em with an impact driver. They're loctited in.

while you re in town :-D get some stainless steel allen-key button head screws for replacement - look very cool and wont rust. no need for loctite (imo)
