    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Where to put Electrex R/R on pre 80s models

I tried a search for "77 78 79 Electrex" but got just about every post in the forum due to everyone's signatures... including mine!

I have heard the unit can get hot mounted underneath the battery box, where the regulator is. How about under the left sidecover, where the rectifier is located? It's a one bolt mount but it would be cooler. I suppose I could even drill a hole for a second bolt.
 
Mine is under the battery box. If you are conserned you could mount a computer fan to blow air on it, or mount the rec/reg up front in the air stream

They may get hot, but they are designed for it, hence the fins.

Have there been any cases of failure due to excess heat?

Excess heat is the main reason they fail...either through excessive current draw and/or not enough air going over the unit to pull away heat.

By "they" Hap do you mean RR's in general, or Electrex ones in particular?

I've never heard of an Electrex one failing, just wondered if they did.

That is true of almost all electrical equipment. Whan happens is that the componets are over heated until they fail or the insulation system fails thus causing the componets to fail in turn. You can cause a Electrex R/R to fail by pulling too much amperage through it but it is more difficult to kill than a stock R/R. As far as motors go, they fail most of the time due to bearings going bad, unless they were undersized for the application in which case they would draw too much current and again it would be the heat from the excess current that would kill them.

The Electrex unit is a much better unit just for the fact that it has a larger heatsink to pull heat away from the internal componets. I'm sure they are also using inulation systems that are much better then those found in the early '80s.

I mounted a Honda reg/rec under my battery box years ago with no problems. Hell, there are even threaded holes that line up! Too easy! :D
 
The electrex R/R for my 79 750 is mounted to the right side of the battery box (under the right side cover).

No offence Hap :wink: , but I knew all that anyway. I'm sure some other readers found it interesting. The answer I was struggling to get was whether or not Electrex specifically had a record of failures. In my experience they do not. Therefore, although extra cooling can never do any harm, I don't think there need be any special concern over placement of the unit.
