A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

im going to be doing a valve adjustment next week on my 82 gs1100gl. i last did it about 4000 miles ago. i remember almost every valve was in the middle of the spec range when i was done. im at college and my bike is at home and i need to order a valve cover gasket and shims now to be at my house for next week. my question is, if i were to order some shims from Z1 enterprises, which size should i order that i would most likly need? im thinking 2.45. what do you guys think? thanks.

Just take it apart and measure, put it back together and ride while you order the shims you need. There's no telling what it will need, most likely none if it was really the middle of the range 4,000 miles ago.

Order shims so you have one size smaller for each valve compared to last time. You keep track don't you?

If they were in the middle range when last adjusted I would be supprise if any of them need adjustment

I agree, probably no rush at all needed. Are you putting the bike up for the winter? If so, and you really want to check them this year, dig into it while the bike is sitting so you can leave it apart if shims are needed.

Is the shim club still active? May want to do a search on that.

i would look on ebay for a shim set with all available sizes. I have several sets , kz , busa . seems like the last one I bought had 4 of each size and was around $100. handy just to keep around

Much better and cheaper to to as tkent said in the very first response: measure what you have, order what you need.

You can check into the "shim club" to see how they operate. Look up GhostGS1 (member name) for details, or you can just order what you need from Z1 for $5.28 each.
