    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Who (besides a cycle shop) would have a clutch cable clevis?

I'm looking for a cable-fastener (which I now know is called a 'clevis' connector) which connects the clutch cable to the pushrod-pusher control-horn.

Here's a diagram:

Any suggestions as to where to get a replacement for this item locally (i.e. what type of store would have it?), something I can bolt on in leiu of replacing the entire clutch-pushrod control unit?
 
Maybe a marine supply shop. However, if you can find a similar part from a marine shop, I suspect it wouldn't be cheap.
 
Check out motorcycle boneyards if there are any in your area.
 
You could check out a bicycle shop for something like that. You should check to see how much it would cost to have that thing made for you if you refuse to buy one new or used.

If I were to make one I would buy a nut the same width as the control arm and weld/braze a pair of tangs onto it. I'm not to sure I would cut a notch out to insert the wire though.

I just got a longer cable and cut off the end. I used a bicycle cable bolt to hook up the cable. Now I can clean and lube the cable when I want to. Plus I am not stuck buying a cable that is specific to my bike. Just make sure you crimp a wire connector on the end to keep it from fraying.

how about scetching that one for us Chris it sounds like a good idea
 
If you find the clevis, how will you get the old cable conected to the new clevis. Maybe yours is different, but all the clutch cables I've baught for GS 1000, 1100, & 1150's the clevis comes with, and is made on the cable. If yours is different, find someone with an old, broken cable, off one of these bikes, and cut the clevis off. A motorcycle shop should give you an old broken cable
 
A whole new clutch cable is only around $25.. at least it is for an 83 GS750. So just get the entire cable if it already has that end on it.

I just got rid of the clevis thing. With a longer wire you can put it through a cable bolt that has a hole in it to recieve the cable. Then just bolt it to the arm that sticks out of the clutch basket cover.
 
I just remembered that there are commercial businesses that make cables for industrial equipment while you wait. You could have one of them chop off your cable end, put on a new clevis, and then put on a new end.

I'm leaning towards the bike nut route. More durable and versitile, probably...

The clevis that needs replacing is (on my 450) part of the clutch pushrod control arm (riveted on). The cable has a plug on the end, and slips in (same sort of connection as the handle, but there's a clevis there).

Bought a new cable ($17), and when I went to put it in I noticed the busted clevis...
 
The cable ends in a 'plug' connected to the clevis.
I cut off the cable as close to the plug as possible, then cut an 'X' down the plug centreline using a thin cut-off wheel on my Dremel tool.
This allows the new cable to be pushed in and silver soldered in place.
I've done this twice now, works great.
