Why no in-line fuel filters?

Well, this may explain why my bike feels like I have a flat spot and sputters at high speeds on the freeway. Maybe I should try taking my aftermarket inline filter too! :-k

You need a low pressure (as in no pressure) filter. Should be okay with the right filter but you need to do some homework to make sure you get the proper type.
Agreed. There are filters DESIGNED for these setups. I have used one, had one on the cafe before i tore it down. Never had a starvation issue. You simply need to make sure it can flow as much as it needs to. Do your homework. And yes, I also agree, that having a clean tank is ideal, but not always practical. Check around your place. Radiator shops will clean out and acid etch the interior of your tank for pretty darn cheap. It doesnt hurt the paint, and they come out dramaticly cleaner than they were. Having said that, I would most suredly run an inline filter if I knew that I had the right one.

I think that its all in the set up. I had rust in my tank and used the battery charger method to remove the rust but still had the black crap floating around no matter how may times I rinsed it out, so I went to Napa and picked up a 3001 inline filter. The thing is HUGE and clear. I thew it in laying side ways and went for a cruise and ran into starvation. I then mounted it verticly and added a 90 elbow right above the filter and connected the lines still didnt want to work right and now I had a fuel leak. Went back to napa and picked up some small hose clamps so that everything was sealed and I wouldnt lose any "vacuum" from the carbs. The results are great. I just came back from a 50 mile ride (alot of wide open throttle burried needle streches) and not a problem. I looked at the filter and guess what there is a bunch of black sh!t that is in the filter not my freshly cleaned carbs. Just check out how much fuel is sitting in the filter. Its like a china buffet for my bike.

Yeah, I don't know how crap keeps getting past my petcock screen but it was. And it was settling in my carbs. Once I cleaned the carbs I got some inlines from crc I think. Ran one 1500 miles with no starvation issues. However, towards the end of the trip I started noticing two of my pipes bluing, and the bike getting more popping than usual. When i drained the bowls, sure enough sediment came out. The filter stopped a number of small rust pieces from getting through, but not the fine stuff

So I ended up using acid in the tank, and this time I coated with por 15, (and recleaned the carbs a third time).

Will I use an inline again? Yes, until I'm sure I don't have a failed por15 application. Then I'm going to toss it and keep my last one for emergencies. There's no more rust in my tank, and the filter doesn't seem to stop the fine sediment from getting through and clogging tiny jet holes.

in the end, this is the result i am going for too.. but i'm waiting till winter to etch and coat the tank.

Z1 sells one for $2.99 or $3.99 (they were so cheap I just ordered 4 of them so I probably have a lifetimne supply) that is fine for these bikes. I have run one ever since I got the bike and had no fuel starvation issues.

I don’t think there is any substitute for a clean tank. The super low restriction type filters, such as the type Z1 sells with the gold stone inside, don’t filter out the fine particles and the paper filters that are able to hold back the particles will cause a restriction.

My bike has a gold stone filter but the more I think about it, it’s not really performing a significant function.

I believe they are actually brass. But in any case, I have one too and am going to ditch it. There is a filter on the petcock...

Chain or shaft, synthetic or dino...filter or no...
either way is fine.
If you put on a filter, make sure it flows enough fuel.
I have clean tanks on most of my bikes, put inline filters on anyway, as there are bugs, dust, sand, other things that can get into the tank when the cap is open for refueling. Put on a filter and test the fuel flow at that time. If it flows as it should, there won't be a problem.
The bikes with rusty gas tanks need the filter replaced once in a while. So stick one in your toolkit. Replace or clean it before it clogs up.
If the tank is really rusty clean it. Electrolysis, acid, Kerosene and BBs, whatever.
It's all good.
