    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Wider Tire on GS1100G

I've read the threads on changing to a wider wheel, but I really don't want to do that. Has anybody actually just put a wider tire on the stock GS1100G wheel? That skinny tire looks so darn skinny from the back!
 
Apart from not being able to fit a much larger tyre in the swingarm, putting larger tyres on small sized rims makes them roll around a lot more and the handling suffers as a result. Tyre size should be dicated by the rim size, not looks.
 
I agree with you completely hillsy, but that darn skinny tire looks so darn skinny from behind - like my CB900F - SKINNT!

The solution, obviously, is to ensure that you stay far enough ahead that no one ends up close enough to see your embarrassingly skinny tire.

Yes, they stick perfectly well with a 130/90-17... :D

I'll confess that I really don't understand why this question comes up so often.

The real answer is that installing a wider tire on your stock wheel doesn't handle very well, and will likely rub -- notice how close a 130/90-17 gets to the swingarm.

I remember seeing a project a while back where someone was trying to adapt a Madura or Intruder rear wheel to a GS shaftie hub. I don't know if that ever went anywhere.

In sum, you can waste a lot of time and cash trying to get that "phat" look on a shaftie, and you'll end up with something that looks strange and handles worse than when you started.

Spoon on some good modern rubber in the correct sizes (I'm partial to the Avon AM26 RoadRider), bring the shocks, brakes, and forks up to snuff, and enjoy how incredibly well these classics can handle in the real world -- you can ride them very hard if you know what you're doing.
