    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Wierd Starting and Idling Issue

I had rebuilt the GS500E carbs with new kits about a month ago. Started it up and it ran great....

Now the problem. It will start and idle with full choke. But if I goose it in any way, she will stall ot the rpms rapidly fall.

I let it run a few minutes, then shut it off. I let the starter turn for a few seconds and she fires up fine without the choke and revs beautifully...

What's going on here?
 
I should add that the only modification the bike came with was a 4 into 1 Kerker. It had the stock jets to begin with.

If given even a little throttle with the choke on she will die. With the bike cold ofcourse. With the choke off and the bike a little warmed up and throttle application she revs fine.

If I try to turn the choke off, she dies... So I start the bike, let it warm up a little bit with the choke and then turn it off and let the bike die.

Then I start it up without the choke and all is fine. :(
 
It is common for there to be NO throttle response while on choke, but you should be able to feather the choke toward OFF as it warms up, without the engine dying. If you have the stock airbox with the Kerker, you might still have to increase the jets a size or two, but you will benefit more by adjusting the mixture screws to help with the low-speed mixture. That will help it warm up quicker and get you off choke quicker. Have you checked their settings? Might have to remove the factory plugs to get access to them, then turn them in slowly to lightly seat them, counting the turns as you go. Record the number of turns for each one, then return it to where it was. Many consider a good starting point to be about 1 1/4 turns out, but with your header you might want to start about 1 3/4. When the engine is warmed up, turn each one slowly to find the fastest idle speed. Repeat for each of the others. If the idle speed gets to high, turn it back down with the idle adjuster and continue. You will find it to idle much smoother when you are done.

Have you also checked carburetor synchronization? That will also help the idle smoothness and just-off-idle throttle response.
