DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Will a '79 GS850G gas tank fit a '79 GS1000S?

I'd like to improve the range between fuel stops for my '79 GS1000S (it's really the only thing I want to improve) to help make it a more practical tourer for Australian conditons - and to stop my friends, who ride BMWs, complaining that we have to stop too often for fuel.

One idea is to replace the standard tank on the 1000S with one from a '79 GS850G which, I believe, holds around 3 litres more fuel.

So two questions: are the mounting points the same for both tanks and; will the larger tank from the GS850G require a change of handlebars on the GS1000S?

Thanks in advance.

Ian

I think the easy answer is probably not, in terms of fitment. Do you have one of these tanks handy? The consensus on tanks always seems to be that there is not much interchange among the models. How much bigger is the 850 tank anyway? The 1000 tank holds a lot of gas.

I used to have a 1000S, but I can't remember the capacity, but I think it was a little smaller than the tank on the other GS1000. It was designed to look like a cafe racer.

The 850 tank WILL likely fit the 1000 if you get one from a bike before 1982. In 82 the rear mount changed. The 82 and up 850 tanks will fit an 1100G, and MAY fit the 1000G im not sure. A pre 80 750 tank also, i do believe fits a 1000.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The reason I was asking is that I don't have a tank from a GS850G handy.

I'll call some wreckers, if they have one I'll ride out and see if it will fit on the spot.

If I can find one, I'll update this thread with the answer.

Please, Lord in heaven, don't put an 850G tank on a GS1000S. I'm pretty sure Mr. Suzuki can legaly have you executed for that.

That's more or less what my BMW riding mates said when I sold a BM to buy a GS. I pray on it!
