Will GS450 tank fit GS750 frame?

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the GS450 cafe tank, as seen below, will fit a '78 GS750 frame without too much trouble, or is the 750 frame bulky enough to require a lot of cutting and hacking to the tank?

I have seen several cafe builds using this GS450 tank and I think it's dead sexy.

I put a 650e tank on a 450 and the front mounts were perfect, but the tank was a lot longer than the 450 so I had to make new mounts at the back....and reposition the fuel tap because it was right over the rear frame cradle.

So, you'd probably have to do the same in reverse, and it's not what I would call "easy".

No it won't. Not even close.

And I'm sick of d'bags taking all the good body parts off these bikes, f*cking them up to put knee dents in them and whatnot, then trying to put them on some chopped up piece of $hit that will never run again.

All they accomplish is driving up the cost of GS body parts. They've seen a show where some guy with unlimited network funds and four people working behind the scenes makes a "sexy" caf? racer. What they don't realize is it cost $4,000 in parts and labor to get it looking and running that way. The average "caf? builder" has $5 in his checking account, just enough to buy a sawzall blade and start cutting away on the bike of his dreams.

So all that gets done is a good tank gets ruined, the rear part of a good motorcycle's frame gets cut off, and the bike never gets finished because the "caf? builder" has the approximate i.q. of a salamander and the work ethic of an acorn squash.

+1, Then it goes on Craigslost for $7,000.

Who ****ed in your cornflakes? I asked a civil question, least you could do was answer civilly. You don't know anything about me except that I asked a simple question that implied I had at least an idea of what's what.

I do have a stock tank and bodywork (minus covers?) that is in good shape and I saw no point in cutting them up when I could buy a used 450 tank that has the look I want. I know a guy locally who had one for sale for $25 so I figured I would ask.

Thanks for the info. I suspected as much. Don't need an unfinishable project for sure.

At this point I strongly deny that I had ever entertained the notion of cutting up my '79 and turning it into a CR.
Nope, not me.
Never did.

So did you buy the tank from that guy? I'd like to buy it if you didn't

The short answer is that it fits but the mounts don't line up between the 750 frame and the ones on the 450 tank. I'm using my 80 450 tank on my 79 750 as a spare until I can get my 750 tank coated or replaced. Excluding the mount placement it actually fits quite well but you will need to watch as the forks will hit the tank when turning. If you want I can shoot you a picture to show the fit on the bike.

I'm building a cafe, also cut the frame to hell and back. Sold all my OE parts dirt cheap. So go back in your hole and and go back to beating off to the Golden Girls.

Kawazacky, I have leads on other tanks, that will bolt right up with no modifications if your interested. But you'll have to pay maybe $50-75.

Interesting ... I'm all ears. Paying $$ for a bolt-on is just as easy as paying $$ to weld.

I thought a CX500 tank or even an old R90?? Beemer tank might fit, but such bits are few and far between here in the Frozen North.

Sure, I guess that would be a help. Did you weld the new mounts on?

This here is the bike I saw that I liked.

I'd put a front fender on it and probably a V&H exhaust.

On a related note, there is an '81 GS750L for sale near me dirt cheap. The claim is it only needs the leaking tank fixed or replaced, and can't be ridden before then. I have an '82 GS450T sitting in the garage with a full tank of gas, in a non-leaking tank. How hard would it be to take my tank over and fit it to test ride the GS750L?

If it's just ride up and down the street then take some 2" foam sheet for under the tank and some octopus straps and you'll be OK.

Do you mean that the rubber donuts on the frame won't fit the holders on the tank (or vice versa - I haven't had a tank off in 20 years), or just that the rear mount won't match up?
