    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I made it folks. The bike has been running well since Tuesday. Here's the short end of it: The bike is 1980, I had an additional set of 1982 carbs, and I had mixed and matched the internals. On Monday I decided to clean all the 1982 innards and install them in the 1982 carb bodies, and viola! it ran. I sync'd the carbs (with a homemade adjuster [one 8mm socket, one 12" length of plumbing tubing, and one 11/16 nut, JBWelded together]) and it has been running since.

Though not registered or insured yet, I've run it around the neighborhood and up and down the hwy a little to fine tune things. I even rode it to a friends house to show it off, but he wasn't home. Still, I got to ride it through some mildly twisty backroads. To borrow from some good motorcycle friends, "It blew the stink all off." I have ridden these roads on a friends 1981 Honda CB900, and my GS850 is more nimble and enjoyable. A real sweet ride.

So if anyone gets stumped in the carb he11 experiences, don't jump your bike from a running vehicle, replace your RR whether you jump it or not, and keep plugging away. (More details on the Technical section.)

Thanks for all the encouraging words. Forgive me, but to borrow from Stephan Sondheim's Into the Woods, "And I know things now, many wonderful things, that I hadn't known before."

Best.

P.S. Time to change my signature line!

Congratulations!!! I believe you have finally arrived. :-) :-) :-) In the end,
I find its always worth it. The problem sometimes is in believing that during the process. eh eh eh

I agree, I believe one of the first things to do to a GS is to clean ALL electrical connections and replace the RR on them, We purchased a 250 for my wife to learn on, I sent it to the local bike shop to be tuned and serviced, I trust these guys ( I have even let them work on the Tractor) they had her 250 for three weeks and couldnt get a stable idle, they got it the best they could, BTW they kept us informed of progress, and discounted the work because they couldnt achieve the desired result. I being not the sort to allow such a situation to continue ordered a new RR for the bike fitted it and it has idled perfectly ever since.
