  • Returning Visitors

Wiring up KOSO Digital Gauge - few questions

Hi guys,

few things to ask... if you need pictures of wiring diagrams let me know but ill try be as thorough in my explanation as possible

Firstly:

1 - Ive got probably a third as many wires coming out of my gauge compared to the ones from the harness. Most of the Indication Lights in the gauge (oil,indicators,neutral) only have ONE wire coming out. For Example "White = Neutral Light (+12v/-)" whereas on the existing harness my neutral light has an orange and blue wire coming from it. Does this mean i can connect to Either of these wires and it is fine?
Just being cautious at the minute as i dont want to fire it up and blow any of the lights/gauge.

2 - Similar question, I have one Green wire (Fuel (-) ) coming out of the Koso Gauge, and looking at my wiring diagram for the gsx400f, i have two wires coming from my feul gauge, a Y/B and a B/W. Does this mean i connect to the B/W wire?

3 - Lastly, The Red wire from the Koso is ""+" wire connect key on DC12V Main Power Switch" - can i splice this into the red wire coming from my ignition?

again, if any images need to be referenced please let me know :)

No it does not. The orange wire appears to be power to the bulb and the blue is the wire that connects up to the gear indicator switches 'neutral' wire. If the new gauges you have are wired as I suspect they are, the gauge set will have it's own power supplied internally leaving only a need for you to have to connect them up to your GSX400F(?)'s blue wire.

I suspect you would connect it up to the yellow/black IF it's like my 850. Unfortunately I couldn't find a GSX400 wiring diagram that showed a fuel gauge. Again, I suspect the green wire should be the wire connected to the wire in your harness(Y/B) going to the tank sending unit. You'll need to either post up both of your wiring diagrams to be 100% certain.

IF the red wire is HOT with the key on, Yes. BUT I don't believe it will be. I think you'll find it's the orange wire

Sounds like my Acewell... some lights are + triggered, others - triggered.

For the + triggered ones, the ground is common with the single ground wire going to the gauge.

For the - triggered ones, the + is common with the single + wire going to the gauge.

In the case of my 450, the oil pressure sensor is - triggered, so I just hooked the sense wire straight to that wire and the + side was already taken care of.

Same for the high beam indicator, except in reverse because it's + triggered.

I hope that makes some sense, but yes post the diagrams so we can see!

Just for reference Ive connected:
Koso ---> Bike :::

Green/Fuel --> Y/B (fuel gauge)
White/Neutral --> Bl (N = Neutral light)
Yellow/High Beam Indicator ---> Y (from B=high beam indicator)
Orange/LeftTurn Signal ---> B (from T=Turn signal indicator)
Blue/Right Turn Signal ---> Lg (from T=Turn Signal Indicator)
Gray/Oil Light ---> G/Y (from P=Oil pressure Light)

and Finally Red/Power which im going to splice onto RED from Ignition but have do this.

Have sent a PM to the poster requesting clarification on the negative symbol/value listed after the +12V.

As I see it so far...

Green (fuel) >> Y/B

Yellow (high beam) >> Yellow

Orange (left turn) >> Black (at ft signal lamp)

Blue (right turn) >> Light green (at ft signal lamp)

White (neutral) >> Will need a micro relay to change the 0V input (earth) from the neutral switch.

Gray (oil) >> Will need a relay to change the 0V input (earth) from the oil pressure switch.

Red (+12V) >> connect to a 'with key on' voltage source. (orange/ verify with dvom)


Waiting for clarification....

as for Micro relays.... It doesnt say anything about these in the instructions. What on earth are they/ do they do?

So you thikn the orange wire from the ignition is the go?

They are a small relay. Adding them will allow you to supply power to an input +ve when the bike only has the capabilities of earthing a wire. You connect it up by supplying +12 to one side of the switched 'contacts', +12 to the 'pull down' coil and connect the other side of the coil is connected to either the the oil and (or) neutral switch as required. The other wire from the switched contact is connected to the input of your new gauge set.

So you think the orange wire from the ignition is the go?

what model gauge is it; the manuals can be downloaded. I'm pretty sure Salty Monk installed one a while back. In the manual I looked at it was not clear what the fuel level or pressure inputs were supposed to be.

Rusty, how are the relays supposed to be hooked up and what for?
 
Jim, if his gauges require a +12v input to operate the neutral and oil pressure lights, I suggested he use a relay (micro) by hooking up one of the 'switched' contacts to +12v (30) and the other to the new gauges (87). Then it's a simple matter to supply +12v to the pull down coil on one end (86) and the other end (85) is grounded by either the oil or neutral switch as necessary.

OK I get it; the neutral and oil switches are low side controls (i.e. they ground the switch when activated) and you need to supply +12V to the gauge under that condition.

So yes a relay can be used to invert the polarity; probably the easiest to do and any size really would work as the current levels are probably less than 1 amp.

I attached a pic to clarify for nikosg :)

Kinda a pain, on the SSPB I provide both polarities (jumper selectable) for a Switched ACC circuit so no external relays would be required.

Ok guys update time.

Well, i kind of had one of those f&*k it moments today... so i did what i thought was right and fired her up.

I joined the red wire to the orange at the ignition... and BOOM. IT WORKS!

I didnt use ANY micro relays - it just didnt make sense to me after scouring the web about these gauges and no one seemed to mention anything, so I just did what i thought the instructions told and everything worked :)

All the inbuilt lights work. Neutral, indicators, high beam, oil pressure.. all work!!! (big thanks rustybronco for helping me sort these connections)

Will see what sort of read i can get with the fuel gauge but so far everything is working well!!!
