    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 1980 gs550e and this is my first bike. It was running well then just stopped running. I checked the battery and charged it to 100%. All I get when I try to start it is a 'clicking' sound and that seems to be coming from the starter.(at least I can feel the vibration when I hit the start button) I can start it by putting it into 2nd gear, rolling down a hill and releasing the clutch. Should I just replace the starter or should I start somewhere else? Any ideas? Thanks
 
When you checked the battery, did you also check the battery connections to be sure they are clean and tight?
 
You should start with checking the voltage at the starter, when hitting the start button.
 
The clicking sound should be the starting solenoid . If that is the case than try jumping the 2 large posts with a screw driver and see if she starts. Take a look at the posts for corrosion could just be a poor connection.
If it doesnt start by jumping the posts check the wire from the battery to the soleniod and solenoid to starter make sure everything is clean and tight.
Do you have a meter or test light so you can do some checking ?
If the battery is charged the connection are clean when you hit the start button the post with the wire going to the starter should show battery voltage.
Also check the case of the solenoid has a good ground you might have to take it off and clean things up and try it again.
If you get the battery voltage on the wire leading to the started from the solenoid after cleaning. Then its time to look at the starter.

How did you "check" the battery? I'd be more suspicious of that than the starter. +1 check the wiring, but also consider re-testing the battery. Most parts stores will charge and check for free (make sure they don't charge at more than 2A - these little batteries aren't made to handle more than that and you'll kill them quickly). Usually solenoids click because as they close and the starter starts sucking juice, their voltage drops causing them to lose energy and open. Then the voltage goes back up and the cycle repeats. It's usually either a bad battery or excessive resistance in the wiring.
