DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Woo! A whole new set of problems!

Ok, so I get the carbs in. I get the tank on. I put all the fittings back in place. Pop the battery back in. Try to start it... nothing, switch to reserve... AHH! LIFE!

It took a moment (for gas to circulate) but it sprang to life. I did have a problem with keeping it idling, I guess I turned down the idle adjustment too low when I fiddled around with it. Easy enough fix. For now I had to keep playing with the throttle...

But wait, it's slowing... more throttle! Not helping!

It stops...

It then decides to **** on me.

Gas started leaking... the last of my gas in the tank. But not from the airbox vent hose anymore... No, from someplace new!

Oh, and I just checked on the air filter. Pulled it out, soaked with gas, also the hole into the airbox to the carbs is full with gas up to the lip of the filter box.

Sounds like you have a float that's sticking.
If the petcock is not straight up and down, gas is flowing to the carbs freely. If a float is stuck, the gas will run from the tank and out past the sticking float(s).

In the reserve position, gas is running freely to the carbs. A Float that is stuck will continue to leak gas out of the carb(s).

Well, I just rebuilt the carbs. One of the posts that holds the float pin is broken, looks like someone tried to patch it up with some epoxy, but that didn't work. There's still a half circle left, just no top. I'm guessing that's causing the "stuck float". Which means, I'll never get this bike to run without replacing the carb body?

Yep, you need a new carb.

Alright, and where do you suggest I get one? If I remember right it was carb #3 (always the problem carb so far). I guess I'll go take them off to get a better look.

Perhaps this is why I got the bike for free?

Watch eBay, I found a set for my GS1100E about six weeks ago for 100 bucks, and they were completely rebuilt and ready to go!

I found a set that'll work for my bike, but I won't have that much cash for about a week and the auction ends in 3 days.

I'm gonna try calling up some of the salvage yards around here. I have all the rebuild parts, I'll just clean up the new carb and put all the parts I bought into it.

I had a busted float bowl on my Cb350. Not like I was gonna spend money on it, so I mixed up some metal epoxy. It's got steel filings in a two-part mix resin and hardener. This stuff is gold!. I bet you could fab a post with what's left.

I thought about that, but what about removing the pin after making the post? I work at a hardware store, so I know all about epoxies and things. I was thinking JB Weld would do the trick when I first looked at it. But, again, pin removal?

Maybe put a blob of JB Weld on there (hang it upside-down so the blob won't slide away), then drill through it for the pin hole and shape it as neccessary. Maybe a few applications of JB will be required to get enough height?

I did that years ago on a damaged carb. Worked for awhile, then the gas softened and dissolved it (pinhole in the bowl). With all the alcohol in gas now, it would probably dissolve even more quickly.
I use different epoxy mixes for all sorts of repairs, they work in most instances (JB Weld is fixing a cracked exhaust manifold on my Jeep presently), but I have a hard time getting them to work well in strong solvents, which is what today's formulation of gasoline is.

I found a site that will rebuild the carbs and whatnot for you. They'll also fab up the post for $50. They said they use marine epoxy. I have my dad bidding on thos ebay carbs, if I don't get those and this place I checked out doesn't have a carb for a reasonable price then I'll just get some marine epoxy from work and try to fab up the post as best as possible.

Try Cycle World on Rivers Ave. Used to be Cycle Salvage. Ronnie has all kinds of stuff.
