Im so excited Ive been workin hard to make my great 78 gs1000ec even better!!! I sold my busa to fund this project. My mods list is too long to list but heres a breifing...new 4-1 alphabet pipe, 4 uni pods, dynojet kit, mags to BLACK spokes, Dyna coils, wires, and Dyna S ign, early single disc type rotors...but two and extensivley drilled, rear drilled rotor, already had ss lines, WORKS rear shocks with WORKS replacement dual rate fork springs, GS11000 swingarm, 530 chain conversion, and 3.10 ratio for more accel/less top speed. Also when I cleaned my carbs I found lots of crude which probably explained the flat spots and poor idle I was experiencing, so that will be worked out. Thats all I can think of now... however Ive calculated a 70lb weight decrease from stock...Im shooting for 495 wet weight and Im almost positive I can get it. I know you purist out there will probabley cringe but this thing is going to fly. Heres some pics as of today...

And finally here is a bad pic of when I got her. This is also the first motorcycle I owned and first bike drive ever. 2 1/2 years prior...

Good luck with the project. It was a clean bike to start with, so that really helps. Keep posting pics.

Project complete!!! Pics!!

Project complete!!! Pics!!

Hey guys...well I finally completeted my bike for a second time and rode the crap out of it today. Im so happy with all my mods. It handles so well!! I dont know the weight of it but it feels much lighter in the corners. New suspension is amazing! I didnt expect this acceleration either...and remember thats coming from a guy that has owned a busa! Some other fun adittions are the new style sport pegs, lightweight batt. in tail, and a deleated ignition switch. The lower gears make it accelerate like crazy; on full accel the front gets very light . I love it!! I havnt messed with the carbs at all because it seems to have a much more normal power curve than before. After 3 months of not riding it and working on it Im anxious to ride istead of keep messing with it. I would like to thank all of you. I wouldnt of known were to start and what models and parts to work; to get all these changes. Long live the GS!! Heres some new pics...

I built all the rear tail brackets myself out of 1/8' thick al. and theres still room for a tool bag and reg/insur in there too...

Heres one more. Im running no fender or chain guard, I like the look, however if it rains or I plan to do a long trip...then I have a fender that will slap on in 5mins. I also like the one front rotor. I can also change to duals in about 30 mins if I wish. Thats dual e model singles (thicker/larger than ec model).

Nicely done. I wspecially like the black spokes and the rear battery mount. Did you fab the license bracket yourself?

Yep...

Yep...

Yea, the only stock piece is the outer tail plastic.

Looking sharp man. I really like the wheels on that. Happy to hear your happy with your results. Can't wait to get my bike back from my mechanic friend and start tinkering on it. Nothing more fun than something you create with your own hands. May have missed it, but did you do a swing arm switch or do those wheels work with the stock GS set up? If so, where did you find those wheels? I've been looking for a pair similar to thoses for my GS. Thanks for sharing your ride man.

Spokes

Spokes

The swing arm is off a GS1100. The spokes will work with with a steel swingarm or Al. The front is the same diameter while the rear spoke wheel is 1" larger in diameter than cast al. wheels. I bought these off ebay and had them powder coated. Thanks for the compliments. I know a lot of people wont like it, but I had a great time cuztimizing my bike to what I like. I know it will turn heads becuase it looks so unique. My main goals were to reduce as much weight as possible and improve handling. It will now out handle and out accel any stock bike of the same era by far ... and mabye even out accel. mordern bikes excluding the top tier sport 600s and 1000s. I am very happy with my results and all the expenses were well worth it.

Nice lookin' GS Grand you got there. :D

What kind of Odyssey battery did you use?

I used the PC310. You were the inspiration for getting an odessey and relocating the battery. Thanks.

Next to making a GS1000 lighter, the hardest part is making it look smaller. They just look huge. (because they are huge) The aluminum swingarm, bright color and losing the rear fender really help bring the scale of the bike down considerably. It looks good. :-D
I do think a small body color front fender would really finish it off.

fender

I have a small plastic one of a later model that fits good...I just need to paint it. When I do Ill throw it on and see.

Very nice bike you put together! I like the black cases and how you eliminated the rear fender. Looks awesome, especially the spokes. I have some similar mods on my GS but my wheels weigh a ton. I really wanted spokes on mine but didn't want to run tubes. Are those GS rims w/tubes or something else?
