A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Yamaha oil filter bolt

I've picked up an '82 XJ 650 Yam. but I have run into a few problems with it. The main problem is that the bolt that holds the oil filter cover on is rounded and siezed. As this is also a pressure release assembly I cannot drill it out. Before I go ahead and try grinding the head off of it (and risking damage to the filter housing) I wondered if anyone on this site could help out with any other suggestions? I know it is not a GS but with the experience of the site members I was hoping someone wwould be able to help.

take it to a machine shop that can weld a large nut to the head of the bolt, done correctly it will allow you to remove the bolt.
with stuck bolts, you can often tighten the bolt slightly breaking the bolt free for removal!

You could try cutting a groove in the head of the bolt and use an impact screwdriver.

I've had the same problem with an XJ750 and an XS1100. In both cases, after rounding off the head of the bolt, I resorted to welding a spanner onto it, and then freeing it. The heat from the weld causes the alloy in the casing to expand more than the bolt and this also helps. You can then grind off the spanner and weld on a 19mm nut so it's easier to remove next time. Yamaha specify a really low torque setting for this bolt and you should stick with it. I don't think an impact driver is much help in this case.

Re: Yamaha oil filter bolt

Sears in the U.S. sells a wrench made specifically for gripping rounded off bolt heads for that problem. I dont know if Sears is in the U.K, but if not, I would guess you have automotive tool houses that sell specialty wrenches.

You could also file two flats on the bolt head so you could get a wrench on it.

These things get really stuck. Problem is, the bolt head is only 12 or 13mm, the idea being that you don't tighten it too much. The thread at the other end that screws into the casing is about 22mm (if memory serves me). Filing flats across the head will get you nowhere; you just won't get enough purchase on it. The crude method I've described WILL work, and you'll be amazed at how it came to be so tight in the first place. I've done this twice, and there are a couple of puzzled new owners out there with 19mm oil filter bolts.

Since no one has mentioned it, you can try using a pipe wrench on the head, if you have access. The pipe wrench works brilliantly to bite harder as you turn harder and won't easily slip like a vise-grip will. If you don't have the access for the pipe wrench, then welding a nut on is about the only game in town.

Thanks for all the advice, I know that I could count on my friends on this forum! I will not be able to act on this yet as my wife has been taken into the hospital under intensive care and life has to take on different priorities. Be assured that I do value your assistance and will shift that bolt in due course.

Finally found the time to tackle the stuck bolt. I bought a set of bolt removers in the form of a socket manufactured by a company called Irwin (probably the ones you advised me of Earl). I bought these as I have no access to welding gear. All I can say is that I thourghly recomend them. Iam now building my wife cabinet for her dollshouse.

Sorry about the dolls house reference in my last post but my wife hi-jacked my message whilst I was out of the room!!!!
