    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

For those that don't know, I was given an '80 Yamaha XS400. Unfortunately the air filter boxes are missing so I was considering going to pods. What kind of issues can I expect, if any, if I do this? The exhaust is stock.

You can expect lots of issues trying to get the bike to run right. I say this from experience having owned an XS400 before and trying pods. The only way I was able to get the bike to run right was to use the rubber velocity stacks that connect the carbs to the air box and clamp the pod to that. The rubber extension worked great to smooth out the air entering the carbs thus allowing them to run right.

Nice little bike.. if I were you ( and not in a hurry ) I would ckeck for an air filter box on eBay. If you go the air pods route, remember that these carbs were tuned for the EPA era and most likely hard to tune. I can only speak for 1980 Yam XS650 but people have had many problems with cheap air pods bought on eBay, the easiest to tune were unipods, from Uni-filter ( the foam type). Take a look at http://www.mikesxs.com/tech_tips.html they describe what you'll have to do on these carbs to make them work . Mikesxs is also a good place to buy new parts for yammies ( mainly for XS650 but many parts were interchangeable with teh 400 )

Thanks for the link. I've still got the tube that connected the carbs to the filters. My biggest problem is that there appears that there were boxes that the filters went into. Those, and the side covers, are missing. I'll have to check again, but I believe that Bike Bandit showed those boxes as being unavailable. I can still get the filters, though. It just seemed that they'd be a bit more exposed than a set of pods (and I was looking at the Uni's).

Make adaptors and clamp the pod filters to the rubber extension tube. Worked for me.
 
That's the bugger!:-D Pods it'll be then.
