    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Yosh 4-1 on a '83 GS1100e

My son fixed up a dented Yoshimura 4-1 that I had picked up cheap, but the slip on muffler is considerably shorter than the Yosh on his '82 GS1100e, probably a foot shorter. His muffler extends just rear of the rear axle, mine is like I said about a foot shorter...any exhaust experts available to give me input on what to expect with a "shorty" pipe? Or should I cut/weld my muffler section to match my sons? Performance is more important to me than looks, but I'd just as soon not have to cut weld if it won't really make much performance difference. I think header length is the more important performance parameter, but is overall length also important???
 
I've been looking for a Yosh replacement can for over a year. Tough to find. A free flowing slip on type muffler should all be close to the same as far as performance. Cone Engineering has a good selection of slip ons and I saw a very nice Yosh styled version on Webike/Japan. With the exchange rate, the Webike version wasn't priced to bad, closest I've seen to a Yosh but still not cheap.
 
my question is about the overall system length, I have an original Yosh can that my son polished up for me, but it's mounted on a rear pipe section(part that slips on header) that is shorter than my son's Yosh system. Did Yoshimura make different length systems(i.e., a "shorty") or has this one been modified, and what would be the best setup? I rather like the look of the shorty, it ends just rear of pass pegs, while my son's ends just rear of rear axle. Which is right, and what might be the performance difference?
 
I?d imagine that performance difference would be minimal, if even noticeable. Probably a noise difference though.
i have the "long" one that ends at the axle. I have pictures of it opened up if you need.

010.jpg...here's the other Yoshimura on my son's GS1100e...which is best??? Is it sacrilege to go with the shorty??? He wants me to restore the shorty to original...but did Yosh make a shorty???
 
Looks like a section was taken out of the mid pipe, then it was welded back together. I thought you referring to the canister itself being shortened.
 
Yeah, it appears that the only difference is the mid-pipe. Shouldn't make any difference in performance.
Couldn't tell you which one is more "correct" than the other. :-k

I hope something like that doesn't affect performance. We added a mid-pipe to my son's bike recently. We are also in the process of changing engine gaskets, so haven't had a chance to run the bike to see if there was any change.
