    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

50 laps into a 2 day track session, pulled into hot pit hearing noises, first session of second day, starter clutch grenaded again is my thought, my day is over, heard engine digest parts into sump, or so I thought. Went for one more lap to see if awful sound continued, it did not. Rode the rest of the day.

My Idle Gear (IG) is 17/70 tooth if I counted correctly, can I run a 1100 big taper rotor/SC/IG with 1150 starter motor? Thanks if anyone knows.

The helicoil on the rotor was the only thing that didn't appear oval. 2800 miles to this. I guess now I can show someone what the starter clutch is made of and have it welded like RRay has been saying all along.

The big end 1100 and 1150 starter clutches are the same except for the dowel.
It is the idler gear and starter that differs so use the 1150 starter with the 1150 idler gear.
 
Not sure what the count is on a 1100- it's not 17/70 like the 1150.

Seems like the manufacturing tolerances of this starter clutch gear (496-1) weren't up to the original that came with the bike.

I'm riding to Sea Ranch in N. Cal in less than a month, so I might just bump start there, and park on hills, to avoid another failure until I can figure out what

to do,or steal the SC from my other 1150, but might end up with more allen bolts floating around in the engine.

even if it is welded -- cracks appear between the holes on the large gear -I have had this happen more than once - it is not always loose bolts


because I value the ease of self starting I inspect mine more often now. couple times a summer instead of every couple years

GS1100: 55/18 = 3.05
GS1150 =70/17 = 4.1
Different ratios. The second one is easier to turn I guess.

So the starter motor has a different tooth count then too?

Yes the spline count is different for each starter (1100 or 1150).

What caused yours to grenade like that?

I was in there with a new SC and left end in February, checked again in June., because it was snatching, found loose bolt, put in heli-coil, all is well and quiet, for several hundred miles, then the low rpm noise occured again.
