All the above, plus factory manual if you can find it, and of course a large dose of forum wisdom. All the manuals sort of suck but in different ways, so oftentimes you can sort of triangulate the issue by blending the scraps of information into a more or less intelligible whole.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
 2005 KLR685, Aztec Pink - Turd II.3, the ReReReTurdening
2015 Yamaha FJ-09, Magma Red Power Corrupts...

Exactly and precisely. When I was 18, it was either/or. Almost half a century later, I can afford 'All of the above.'Originally posted by bwringer View PostAll the above, plus factory manual if you can find it, and of course a large dose of forum wisdom. I's lucky, back in "81" when I started working on my own bikes, I borrowed my dealer's factory, 3 ring binder, GS1100E manual. Took it to my workplace and page by page copied the whole thing, then had my own 3 ring binder service manual. Still got it.... Gosh that was a bunch of copying.1983 GS1100E, 1983 CB1100F, 1991 GSX1100G, 1996 Kaw. ZL600 Eliminator, 1999 Bandit 1200S, 2005 Bandit 1200S, 2000 Kaw. ZRX 1100

I did that on my home PC and printer (from basscliff). I had to resize every page as well. It was winter and I had just got my first bike in 24 years, so it was a labor of love.Originally posted by rphillips View PostI's lucky, back in "81" when I started working on my own bikes, I borrowed my dealer's factory, 3 ring binder, GS1100E manual. Also of knowledge. How many people can say that they've read every page of the shop manual?1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red
