Nope. The '84 carbs are CV type, and your '79 carbs are VM, mechanical slide type. The VM's are smaller diameter, which employ smaller carb boots and smaller head ports.

It may be possible to adapt the larger carb boots onto your head, so you can use the CV carbs, but it's of questionable value.

Thanks for your reply. CV Carbs are already on my 1979 GS850G and I can get a set off a 1984 which look the very same.

Hum. Are you sure your 850 is a 1979 model year? If it was build after July or August 1979, it's most likely a 1980 model year bike. If you have an electronic ignition, what will be addition information suggesting it's a 1980.

Anyway, those '84 carbs should be fine.

It is Registered 1979. It had points, however, I installed electronic ignition to it. I can't find any reference numbers on them.

It doesn't have a kick start.

No kickstart = It's NOT a 1979 model year bike. No worry, those CV carbs you found will work. I have O-ring kits if you plan to rebuild them.

That would explain the CV carbs and lack of a kickstart shaft. But it would have had electronic ignition, not points. That combination did not appear on any model or engine in the U.S. market AFIK. I do not know about Ireland or other markets. .

Perhaps some pictures and provenance would help solve the mystery.

Depending on the source of the engine. Some breakers strip all the easily removeable bits and just sell the bare lump. Could be that's what happened, and the PO re-used his points set-up.

My signature contains links to a carburetor rebuild tutorial, inside of which, you will find a detailed list of the O-ring sizes needed to rebuild a set of Mikuni CV carbs.

My signature also contains a link to how you can purchase an O-ring kit. Buying this way will be cheaper than sourcing the various O-rings in your local market.
