I used to get stuff from Andover Norton in the UK (they supply almost everyone stateside, as the original owner bought out all the Norton tooling, drawings, etc when they folded). It was often less expensive to buy from them than the US, if the parts weren't large and heavy. In fact, it was less expensive to have them shipped here than to buy them in the UK (!), because they don't charge us VAT.
Those days are gone. Prices are way higher, and it just stinks, period.Last edited by oldGSfan; 09-30-2025, 05:14 PM.Tom

The whole thing stinks in the short term, in order to save my sanity I have to entertain the idea that this little bit of hardship will return dividends once we get our country back to being able to supply itself with what it needs as opposed to forcing the rest of the world to supply it for us1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)

I'm waiting for a scooter carb from China, the 98 Zuma scooter was missing the choke plunger, the only part I could find didn't fit so I ended up ordering a cheap replacement carb. I'd have loved to find a genuine Yamaha Dellorto carb but ebay only had a greasy ball of cables that was supposed to have a carb with it. The Ad said you will pay no more after the initial purchase and shipping. We shall see.

Let me give you this bit of basics, from Wiki:
Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome.

This definition and description of inner workings seems appropriate for this narrative,. It also meets your request and identifies a few examples by name.

Those are just price adjusted accordingly.
ANY tariff is a form of tax and it is always passed on to final customer/purchaser., whether openly or hidden in the price.
Every one involved in each step in the purchase chain and/or transportation process adds on their own cost and profit before moving it on to the next step.
This is what happens in all sales in our respective countries.
The simplest of realities is that businesses of every kind MUST make a profit or at least break even in order to stay in business.
With profit margins often being slim in many markets, the foolishness that everyone should "eat the tariffs" is literally foolishness.
In order to make it appear that way the final prices must be increased, so a price at retail of say $30 pre-tariff will be $$39....or more and no mention will be made of the tariff.
Stated at its simplest level, this is what has been happening for decades, on all imported products. The end consumers ALWAYS ,pay the tariffs...
.ALWAYS..
Also, as mentioned by others UPS has easily been the worst for cross-border charges for many years.
My most egregious example with UPS happened about twenty years ago.
UPS charged me a total of $35.00 in fees after they voluntarily paid non-applicable taxes for a ten dollar used motorcycle part from USA.
.
UPS literally volunteered the submission of one dollar to the Canadian Government as taxes even though the $10 item was totally exempt from any tax.or duty..
I ceased using UPS entirely after that, but it was NOT uncommon for UPS to "volunteer" a small payment of taxes, as any submission of tax allowed them to charge extra fees, as well as recover whatever amount they volunteered to pay.. I suspect that, collectively, they made many, many, thousands of dollars as profits in their fees.Last edited by argonsagas; Today, 11:45 AM.

As to cults, I've been a member of one for over three decades, what's going on in todays political climate is nowhere NEAR cult-like, more like people buying into the herd mentality. After all, if you don't stand out from herd the wolves are less likely to try to eat you, right. Just a bunch of sheep towing whichever line their handlers feed them as being "true" that day.
