Ukraine could choose to surrender to Russian annexation before invasion.
Ukraine could choose to fight a guerilla war after invasion, and become a disaster like the Syrian rebellion.
It is a test of commitment between Europe and Russia.
If Russia is fully committed to invasion in spite of European negotiations, it's time for NATO to let go with battlefield tactical nuclear weapons as they cross the Ukraine border in concentration before the Russian invasion forces disperse into Ukraine.
It's just too insane to hold back.
I don't know what will happen.

    Putin has mastered the game.

Will it go beyond that and end with this?

No. Scared that the consequences will cost the world more than a military solution can yield.

Putin is a relic from the cold war a thug, murderer, nothing more than a 3rd world dictator. He's seriously miscalculated the economic hurt that's coming Russia's way.

A "relic"? Perhaps, but as a game player he ranks as excellent.

This article from New York Times provides some insight.

Putin is only trying to fool his own people, his plans visible to everyone in the west and it's the west specifically Europe that matters. Militarily interfering in another countries business is one thing the USA does that a lot. A thinly disguised land grabs are no longer acceptable today if the Europeans hold the line with sanctions Putin will regret his invasion. The sanctions will need to be more than a slap on the wrist and bring the Russian economy to it's knees.

'First World' - U.S. Western Europe and their allies.

'Second World' - Communist Bloc (USSR, China, Cuba and their friends)

'Third World' - Non-Aligned and neutral countries

Common usage today is wealthier countries are the first world, and poor or developing countries are the third world. Those in between are second world. None of them holds a candle to Second City TV.

it now seems as if the russians are just manipulating markets and milking the profits from their policy swings.

Russian troop buildup still growing, with the end of the Olympics two days away and considering Putin's face to face meeting with Xi at the Olympics it's plausible Putin promised not to invade until next week.

surrounding Ukraine on all sides and sea coast, done...moving medical supplies to the border, done...using the Olympics as a distraction, done...predicted cyber attacks on Ukrainian military command, done... false flag attacks in the separatist region, done. Weather for next two weeks looks good, light rain Monday/Tuesday. Putin's warned Russians about western sanctions, I don't see it being walked back now.

It's all in place just pick a day, first attack will be in the early morning, main attack at daybreak.

The US "tattletale" tactic is pretty interesting.

We're not going to send in the US military, but we're not going to leave any room for surprises. pretexts, or excuses other than "Vlad wants this territory, and doesn't care how many people die".

Much quieter is the massive amount of assistance from Western nations in place; supplies, materials, weapons, and of course intelligence.
