my 750 is leaking oil from the ignition side crank seal. behind the points. any tips on removing this seal without having to split the cases?

Take the old one out with a couple of wood screws and yank it out.
Put the new one in the freezer overnight and grease the outside rim.
Using the bolt that goes in the end of the crank (or a shorter one) stacked with enough large washers to press in the seal.

Make sure you don't install the seal backwards. There's a teensy directional arrow on the new seal; make sure it's correct.
If you go with the wood screw route and/or drill pilot holes to remove the seal, be aware there's a large roller bearing pretty close behind the seal. It wouldn't be a very good idea to get shavings or a drill bit in the bearing. Vacuum out any debris.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
