82 - gs1100e - terrible clanking noise - video

Still working on friends bike.

I have been working on getting this bike to idle around 1k because it had been set way too high by the PO. After getting "most of" the intake leaks fixed I was able to get it to idle at 1k and below.

It actually sounds pretty good right up until it starts idling too low to stay running.

There is an awful clanking sound coming from the drive shaft area. I put a screwdriver on the shaft and put it up to my ear... even when it is revved up and sounding ok standing up, through the screwdriver I can hear some clanking.

I was able to recreate the sound for you by keeping it right between stalling and idling properly.

sounds like the starter clutch gear .Could also be the clutch, but as I recall that is a deeper knock.

Not good. Easy to check if it's the clutch; take off the oil filler cap and run it. It will sound terrible. Has been known for the clutch hub nut to work lose. Or, as suggested, starter clutch. I would not run that bike until you have pulled the side covers off.

Id check em both. The big nut on the left side crank coulda come loose.

every 1000/1100/1150 out there has loose basket springs unless it has been rebuilt(flying banana-split mod) or had an HD kit installed.
they will make a little sound but the starter clutch will sound like the engine is coming apart right at the point where it starts to die.
this is also true if the carbs are out of sync much.
i know the bike your working on

didn't hear the video....buffering tool to long...more than 10 minutes...

It has a distinct ringing clank, so my guess of starter clutch ring gear.

"clanking" is the dead give away.
another dead small left side engine.
look for spinning of the rotor and shrinkage of the crank taper.
just evil problems for pre- 83's..
if your lucky it's just the bolt's broke and or backed out.
red red red loctite will be your friend

I also revved it so you can see how the sound goes away to the naked ear.

I already ordered a spring and a right side cover gasket for the shifter because it wasn't always returning to the neutral position at low speed when downshifting 3rd to 2nd to 1st. I had to pull up on the shifter after 2nd to press down to 1st.

The manual says "950-1150 rpm", but I would keep it at the high end of that spectrum, even a tad higher.

Ever since my '73 Z1, the manuals have had unrealistically low idle numbers. I think these big Jap fours idle best over 1,000.

My '82 1100e idles very nicely at about 1,200 to 1,300, and I wouldn't want it any lower.

Just pull the covers already.................... There is not likely a Chupacabra in there.

i think that is somewhat normal with no chain on it.

There is a chain on it. New chain new sprockets (530 conversion). This is my friend stock 82 1100E (not my faux 1100 skunk)

I will take the side covers off... sucks since I just put fresh oil in it though, hope I can recycle it.
