Anyone use screw extractor to remove stripped pilot screws?

The threads are .5mm pitch and attempts to "collapse the shell" only damage them. I'm convinced that the proper fix at this point is to run a tap down the hole.

I agree that a quality tap is not cheap, but I'll be damned if I will spend what McMaster Carr wants for one. $10 is my ceiling for one small tap like that.

Thanks for the offer but please sit tight. These carbs are from a CA model 3rd gen 750 and have extra vent ports on them for hook up to a charcoal canister. Even though the extra vents will most likely be capped in the futur, I'd like to keep the set stock for now if at all possible.

This photo is kind of crap but it shows the corrosion on the threads. Note that the corrosion was above the screw, thus preventing removal. I broke this piece trying to remove the plug over the screw. Going to try to JB Weld it back on after the dipping is done.

Got the tap and it cleaned up the hole beautifully. Used it on all the carbs and the threads are all nice and smooth now. I'm counting that tap as an excellent $10 purchase.

Glued that chunk of busted pilot screw tower back on using some high strength 3M DP420 epoxy and it went back in place nicely. I don't think fuel gets up to the threads, or at least it shouldn't, so I think the fix should be good. The tap came in handy there too; it screwed in nicely and the threads all lined up well. It's nice when something goes well.

Only that could hurt the epoxy is heat..and it doesnt get the carbs that hot to effect anything.

I have replaced all my low quality taps in the smaller sizes as I tried tapping stainless steel and ruined them, the taps were fine for alum and mild steel but turned to cheese when used with stainless.

For your carbs it's only cutting soft material so even if it's not made from quality tool steel it should be OK for a good while.

For your carbs it's only cutting soft material so even if it's not made from quality tool steel it should be OK for a good while.

This is the one I bought. It's HHS and the quality seems good. No doubt it's from China but it's decent regardless.
