My analysis of the running issue is that the attempt at salvaging the head after the machinist blunders did not last. Shaving down the cam journals and bearings is a viable repair with precision tooling, I obviously did not meet that standard as the journals had some high spots and a couple of bearings had some scoring marks.
One of the valve clearances had a very large increase from the previous measurement.
Finally getting around to prepping my spare head for installation. Riding season is here so I need to speed it up a bit.
On a side note, I purchased an NOS head gasket from Canada and got hit with a 50% tariff and $25 broker fee. Ouch!1981 GS650E Stardust Silver

Started putting things back together with the replacement head and noticed that all of my intake boots are right side versions. I purchased a full set, i think from Labwork. They dont have any L/R markings. When placed on the left side, they effectively narrow and disrupt some of fuel/air flow. Maybe this is why the carbs were so hard to sync? It ran ok for a while, so im not exactly sure what the total effect would be.1981 GS650E Stardust Silver
