The sons new project 1980 gs850

The front guard is not the original but son likes it and wants it to remain. He reckons it appears lower than the original.

    Flat bars to be replaced

Our next project has started...................picked it up for $400

Compliance plate has it listed as a 10/79 model. Would that mean they began making the 1980 models in late 1979?

It's a 1980. CV carb, no kick start, and better brake calipers among other things. The model year starts roughly in August or thereabouts.

You did very well it appears to me. I thought that there were no good deals to be found down under?
Are the headlight ears bent and causing the turn signals to angle back? It looks like the front of the seat has been shaved a little for the previous rider.
Why no complete picture of the right side? How is the exhaust?

Looks like the seat is not shaved at the front but padding added to the rear section.

Yeah the head light mounts do look a bit bent causing the indicators to bend back.

Looks like you got a great deal. I like black paint/black wheels combo, it really works with that bike.

            Good luck with it.

Good stuff Greg, looking forward to following this! That looks like a steal for $400!!! Didn't think deals like that were still available 'round here...

Definitely have to get you fella's out on a ride some time too... take note of Sunday 1st June and Saturday 6th September as the next couple of ride days, but the Katana boys are out most Saturday mornings too...

Aside from the cosmetic stuff, what else needs to be done?

Thanks, think we will keep the wheels black but tank and plastics will be different colour.

Thanks Pete, yes when Iam not so busy, with work and grandkids, the son and I will definitely would love to go on one of the rides.

Bike is rough a bit more cosmetic work to be done then mine. Got the motor to run but soon filled crankcase up with fuel. Son has been going for it and stripping it down, before I could get too many pics.

Hell, the son was quick stripping bike down. Motor out........

Looks like some fin damage, dremel out to smooth out and maybe will not notice it...........

Ha Ha I told him to heat the exhaust bolts up before undoing and yes there is always one that will not move...............

No probs but a bit of oil around base of seal, do these seals often go and need replacing?????????????

Son is on a roll cannot keep up with the pics.........
He got the broken exhaust bolt out with a bit of heat and a pair of good pliers......

My seat pan was a little worse than that... a wire brush, some rust converter, and a couple of coats of paint and it's just fine...

Yeah will get sand blasted when frame is done.

Wheels have been painted, tried to talk him into going orginal but no wants black powder coating.

Got this part welded on. Guy said he used an old pair of handlebars, looks about the right size. This is the second time I have had to get this part fabricated. It seems that people cut the part off to fit aftermarket pipes, not sure anyone else finding these frames cut off around this area?

This joint was only tack welded. I should of taken a pic of it before it was welded all the around the join.
