    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

1994 GSXR1100W rear shock rebuild in USA

Doing some work on my old bike. The manual talks about the 94 shock not being serviceable. Searching on-line, I found a shop overseas that claims to rebuild them. Looking for a shop in the USA that can rebuild it if possible.

Thanks for any input
 
E was just a typo. It's a 1994 GSXR1100W monoshock. Bone stock grocery getter, one owner.
 
You might try Cogent... sometimes they'll rebuild and improve shocks.
 
it is likely rebuildable, go find a local dirt bike suspension shop and have them look at it. if you seen one shock you have seen them all. Those mono body shocks are easier to manufacture as rebuildable then non-rebuildable because they have way more things going on then standard cheapies.

Again, just posting what the service manual states. I would have bought a new one but with the bike now 30 years old, that is no longer an option. I'll post how it works out.

Grocery getter?!? I don't recall the "W" code (year?). But I recall the first GSXR 1100 ('87?) And it was no shopping cart.

Please don't tell me it has a shaft.

I have no plans to attempt to rebuild it or I would have asked about it. I looked for an aftermarket shock but no luck finding one.

The title and throughout the thread and even the message you quoted where it states 1994, that actually is the model year. I bought it brand new and left it stock. It's just a daily driver. Nothing special.

Now i am confused, your title states .... rear shock rebuild in USA.....

Now i am not the sharpest some times but i like to pride myself on reading. I have given you some ideas, you have chosen to not explore them and that is fine. I think you are making a big deal over not much, shocks are a pretty simple thing that use pretty standard parts that can be sourced by people in the industry that know suppliers who have said parts and how to dissable things. just because a service manual says something doesn't make it true.

For example the service manual for my 82 kat says you can't replace the teflon bushing on the outter fork tubes, what to guess what i was able to do...

Like i said go find a local dirt bike suspension shop, your gsxr shock isn't anything special and is simpler then a dirt bike shock. It has a removeable seal head cause they couldn't weld one in place cause the body is cast aluminum and it's not like the crappy OEM dual shocks in our vintage stuff.


And since i am so charitable i found you a replacement aftermarket shock for your bike even though you had no luck.... I guess it's just a matter of experience.....

And since i am froggy i went to one of the big suspension vendors sites and go figure they sell replacement parts to rebuild your shock even though it's "not serviceable"
They even offer to rebuild it as a service if you want to ship it to cali, but why bother when a local suspension shop can do the same job..

you even have a factory connection shop 45 minutes from you home town that should be able to handle the task.

I don't think I made a big deal of it. I asked for a recommendation. Your first response provided no recommendations, or ideas as you put it. Assuming you made it past the title and read my very first post, you're aware that I had found a source outside the USA who claimed they could rebuild it.

Which is what I had asked for in the first post, and was answered in the second. As you said, no big deal.

Working with a supplier (rebuild or aftermarket) without distribution in the USA poses too high of a risk for me. Having the shock rebuilt locally hopefully insures it is fit, form and functionally the same.
 
He did a really nice job with it. Once I have it mounted and put a few miles on it, I'll report back how it rides. May have to wash the bike so it doesn't look out of place.
