A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Getting to grips (with grips)

eil

Forum Sage
I have what is quite possibly one of the worst first-world problems ever: my handlebar grips don't match. :frown-new:

Years ago, the left one had split down the middle and I replace it with OEM. But OEM today differs from OEM of 1979 and the designs are different. Left grip looks new and minty. Right grip is intact but clearly 40 years old and has lost all of its flavor and much of its grip. According to the parts fiche sites, these are no longer available from Suzuki. Anyway, just a couple of quick questions:

From my research, I am led to understand that aftermarket grips fit classic Suzuki GS throttle tubes, but you have to modify the tube to accept them by filing down one or more ridges. True story?

I also heard a rumor that Suzuki hasn't changed the mechanical dimensions of the throttle tubes in the decades since and that newer tubes work just fine on the old GSes. I can spend a few hours trolling through the catalog of bikes and parts fiches looking for likely candidates, but does anyone have "yes I've done it and know it works" story by chance? That would certainly save me some time if so!

I've used Oury grips on my bikes and like them alot! I did have to remove the "angled portion" closest to the switch housing on the throttle tube for them to work properly. A dremel does a good job of grinding it away. Just my .02

I have a GS500 throttle tube on mine. I don't recall exactly what model or year, but it was certainly a couple of decades later than 1980. It fitted like it was made for it (which, given zuk's propensity for using parts-bin parts, probably was).
The original tube was just worn out, from the inside-out, and became thin and fragile because it was likely the OEM one and had lasted well over 200K miles by then.

I had to file down the "ribs" on my throttle tube to fit the standard size modern heated grips to my bike.
