    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

can't tell if its gas or oil. finally got pics

so whenever I get done riding there is a puddle of gas sitting on top of my starter cover plate. I can't tell where it is coming from because I only notice it when I stop riding. in one of the pics the fuel cock loss soaked so maybe there although in another of the pics there seams to be a black drop under the RH carb. any help much appreciated. 1980 gs 450L runs like a champ but about to winterize her in north jersey so want to fix this problem. thanks

We can't solve this problem for you. You need to clean up the bike, start it up, and watch closely for where the fuel is coming from.
 
What Ed said. My guess is that your petcock is leaking. Start at the petcock anyway. Disconnect both of the hoses from it. Turn the petcock to on or reserve. With no vacuum line attached, no fuel should flow. With neither line connected, you may see fuel drip off the bottom of the petcock, it has nowhere else to travel to.

If it's not leaking at the petcock, if your bike has a fuel level sending unit (I don't know if your bike does. If you have a fuel gauge in the instrument cluster, you have one), that gasket could be leaking. this is located in the tunnel on the inside/underside of your fuel tank. Sinding unit (if present) should have a hose connected to it which would take any leaked gas from there over the carbs to the back of the engine and to the ground. If the hose isn't there. and the sending unit gasket leaks, you would likely see gas in all of the places in your pics.

If it's not either of those two places, I think there's only the carbs left. And like Ed said, hard to see unless you clean and dry everything first. Once clean and dry, powdered foot spray is a great leak detector, easy to notice the moment it gets whet, and easy to wash off.
 
Clean it up... Dust it with talc (you can use spray type foot powder if it helps get it in the right spot) and run it. Watch carefully. Good luck. :)
 
thanks for the suggestions changed the oil and going to give her a good cleaning then start looking. I like the powder idea will definitely try that. for the first time I stalled her and couldn't get her started and killed battery. luckily it was in 7/11 parking lot because I checked the oil and the dipstick was dry. bought 2 quarts rolled down hill and jump started her. came right to life and rode straight home to do the oil change. when I drained the oil however a lot more than 2 quarts came out. my drain pan was to the very top. (the basic black plastic one from Walmart or auto zone) this left me scratching my head as to why dipstick wasn't picking up any oil, the oil light also never came on riding before it happened. thanks for the input ill keep y'all updated
 
Didn't know any GS ever had a dip stick. Depends how any when you measured the oil level. You should wait a good while after shutting off the bike so the oil has time to run down to the pan. You also need to have the bike held up plumb or on the center stand. Most GS's have a oil level view window in the side of the clutch cover. Don't know about the 450 twins.

You checked the oil on the sidestand, perhaps?

Theres no level window on that casing, that I can see.
