Bike is down! timing chain jumped?

Whenever a buddy or anybody tries to tell you what's wrong with your bike, ALWAYS ALWAYS take it with a grain of salt at first.
(unless there's obvious proof)

Believe me, no offense, but a lot of people don't know jack **** about these GS bikes, most people "think" they know, since they know-a-guy who knows-a-guy who had a similar problem,:D

I've had people give me misleading advice like crazy, mechanics, motorcycle mechanics, jet mechanics......trust me, don't be sucked in Just because they have a fancy job title, lol......ask it HERE.....the people HERE know for sure!!!

Good thing that New York is too far for a weekend drive.

I would be putting tkent's words into action. :D
Somehow I get the impression I could have that fine machine purring like a sewing machine in about two hours.

Thread Hijack

Hey Steve, I only live in the next state. When I get my GPz top end back from Pearson Racing, you'll have to make a weekend trip here to far east Indy for a top end install - cam timing - get'r'running party. Steaks are on me. :D

Thread hijack over.
Gabriel, I have never seen a street 4-stoke bike jump time on the chain.
Listen to these guys, they know their stuff.

Hijack back in progress. :D

OK, "Kid", just one small problem. :-k

Yeah, I have a mailing address just one state away, but I'm still down here in

Mississississippippi.

That puts me a 'mere' 625 miles away.

Can you wait until after I get home, mid-November?

But I know know how long I'll be home, either.

Ok Gabe, to much at once.

Set everything to stock and start from there.
You went from chain jump to timing to guessing the jettings wrong. You need to baseline the bike and do ONE thing at a time.

baseline the carbs than set and adjust point gap and timing.
THEN start tuning in the mixture

heh i was all over the place but i just got the bike to start running today, before it wouldnt even start which was my main problem, now that its running its like a different bike now because it has no power to even get out of gear... the plugs are all soaked and black so basically i have a new rich problem out of no where.. i did sorta "baseline the carbs" and did the points and condesnors today which are all gapped perfectly and the timing is perfect according to the service manual... i really think my jets are too big because the carbs are really spot on clean now that i broke em down the other day and started for the first time today

So at high RPM and wide open throttle the engine is running too rich?
Or at some other time where the main jets are not involved?

all the time from 0 rpm all the way up to 9k rpm the bike sounds totally different i think my main jet is so off that its affecting everything?

A 120 main jet might not be perfect, but it's got to be close enough, look elsewhere.

I had a two main jets vibrate out completely while I was riding once (lesson - finish one job before moving on to next). Anyway it ran as long as I stayed under half throttle. I drove about 40 miles home like that. I once ran 135's in a Honda 750 because I didn't have the 120's I wanted that night - it ran fine under 3/4 throttle or so.
The point is: don't put so much emphasis on main jets - check the clip position on needle - Does your carbs have the rubber plugs over the slow jets? It needs them.
Make sure your timing advance is correct before messing with anything else.

hmm the clip on the needle was 1 step rich so i brought it down 1 to the center position. thought that was the problem but it wasnt.. slow jets u mean pilot jets? they are 15's and i dont think they ever had rubber plugs unless your talking about something else.. ill double check the timing advance

bringing the clip down makes it richer, there are no rubber plugs.

Didn't mean to lead you in the wrong direction with the rubber plugs- that's for CV carbs - and I did mean pilot jet.

You should try and find a member in the NY area to help you. Too much misinformation going on, your bike should not that be difficult to get running.

okay guys, first things first I WON :D:D:D:D:D Ignition timing for cylinders 1-4 was way off i adjusted and let me tell you guys... with the new points and condensors the bike is 10000000000000000000x faster than before i cannot believe it... i was truly humbled by this experience and by the grace of God himself the bike was saved. all credit i give to god and these forums and every one of you.. i cannot believe how fast the bike is, i can (shhh) do wheelies like theres no tommorow!! :D:D:D:D:D
