I bought a brand new leftover 1979 GS850G back in the winter of 1980-81 and absolutely loved it. While perhaps a tad heavy, the 850G was a dead-nuts reliable, fast, quiet, steady-handling machine with what was billed then as the most comfortable seat ever put on a motorcycle (and I fully agreed). I found that 15-24 hour riding days were quite doable and I put more than 100,000 km on that bike with zero problems.
