    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Take a minute and read all the articles in the Announcements forum. Also read the Forum FAQ. Between these two areas a lot of your questions will be answered in how we run things here.

    A common problem is with new users posting articles in the incorrect forums. Take your time and READ the descriptions listed for the all the forums on the forum main page BEFORE posting. It should be pretty self-explanatory. If you jump the gun and post an article where it doesn't belong, I may move it but I will probably just delete it (depending on my mood). We have only a few rules here, but posting in the wrong area is a big peeve of mine. Please pay attention to what you are doing.

    Enjoy the forums! I'm sure you'll find the people who hang out here to be a valuable source of information for maintaining your GS.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Info about the website lockups

As a lot of you have probably seen, the website has been experiencing lockups for a while now. It seems to have started in the beginning of September and has been progressively getting worse. I have been working with Support at the webhost and we finally were able to track down the problem to bots. Apparently the website, in particular the forum's URL, made it to some hacker list. This has caused traffic to increase exponentially from the bots thereby slowing things down enough to essentially freeze the server. So today I signed up with CloudFlare. They provide bot and hacker protection for the whole website. This will cost us an additional $20 a month but I think that is well worth it.

So if anyone experiences any lockups on the website from now on, be sure to DM me and let me know. And DM's are the best way to get in touch with me. I have been going full tilt for the past several months trying to get all my scheduled big handyman projects done before winter, so I haven't been around here much lately. I will be having more foot surgery this winter which is why I'm pushing my schedules. Needless to say I am still tapped out. So DM me if something screws up around here and I'll research it as soon as I can. Thanks!
 
I have tightened down the Cloudflare config a bit more today. Things seem to be working pretty smoothly but let me know if you see anything goofy.
 
Still doing it here this morning. Not as badly as it was this weekend, but still fairly frequent "page couldn't load" messages.
 
I'm still getting intermittent failures to load. When it does load it is pretty slow.
