A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Friction Modifiers as mentioned in the 1985 GS450GA owners manual

When that was written SF was the bells and whistles, top dog oil. All multigrade oils have friction modifiers, that's how they get from 10 to 40. Friction modifier means different things in different contexts. Modern car oils can cause trouble with wet clutches. Any SF or later oil should be...

    Bent Camshaft or Uneven Wear?

Look at it this way. Tight is bad and mainly why we go in there to open things up a bit. If tight is bad, the last thing you want is the cam being pushed up at the side you are measuring, making the gaps appear wider than they are.* The day will come when you measure, then measure again and get...

Looking to replace starter motor relay...

Snow has feelings too. It knows the streets where it's not welcome :)

    Bent Camshaft or Uneven Wear?

My understanding is that the clearance depends on where the cams are because of the cam journal clearance. This why Suzuki specify the cam position when measuring the 'official clearance' ?

Looking to replace starter motor relay...

Have to ask but what is wrong with the old one?

    More melted wires/connectors

Best practice would be tape them up and hide them. They cause a lot of confusion when owners find them :)

    1983 GS750ES Fuel Line/air box horrors

I get that fuel hose clamp thing. Modern hoses like the see through alcohol resist are light years ahead of the rubber things from the 80s and you wonder if that little clip is doing anything useful or is in fact making the seal worse? I've walked away from the airbox as well, just before I was...

Unknown hole in block 1979 gs850g

The mention of drain would take all the mystery out of it. Much more fun having people wonder where their missing crankcase bolt has gone to :)

Unknown hole in block 1979 gs850g

There is a breather hose from the top of the secondary transmission case that is routed into the starter motor cavity. Most likely the displaced starter motor is the problem but oil can come from the breather especially if the internal seals have started to fail and engine oil is finding it's...

    Just bought A Beemer

Just replaced the clutch cable on the R1100R. It broke miles from home in bumper to bumper traffic. Kicking a big twin into gear is not like a wet clutch multi and then had to figure out how to get home without stopping :) Got a replacement made by Venhil. I looks very good. I made the mistake...

    SOME...Gas in oil?

Maybe his reputation box is full?

    SOME...Gas in oil?

There will always be gas in the oil. How much and if you can smell it depends on your nose. Has the oil level risen? For what it costs, if in doubt, just change it.

Brake rebuild: where and with what to grease

Yeah, rubber and copper grease have been the go to for ages and I've used them both with no issues. There is a trend to silicone for any part that has rubber like the sliders and ceratec instead of copper grease and I have drifted that way. There is a lot of discussion out there about the pros...

    Gs1000g bloated/overheated/overcharged battery

Most likely the regulator was not regulating because it has an internal fault or it wasn't wired up right and had no idea what the system voltage was. Unlikely the coils are damaged. Bulbs blowing would happen first. Bike will run on battery power alone for a time although at 12 Volts rather...

79 GS425 no power to headlight

Result :) In fairness to the builders, they can't have imagined a forty year plus life for their products.

79 GS425 no power to headlight

Go to the headlight supply plug. Check for continuity between the B/W pin and ground. If it's open you have a ground issue. Check for 12V at the white pin on Lo beam and 12V at the yellow pin on Hi beam. If there is supply to neither the move on to the dimmer switch and see if it is getting...

    Horn sound

Been there, van reversing up a steep hill at me from close range and nowhere to go although I had put myself in one of his blind spots. There were two on the 850 a hi and lo notes. Current ride needed a new one and I ended up with a generic aftermarket hi note. It has the CE approved for bikes...

    Carb rebuild catastrophe!

What parts came with those kits? Conventional wisdom here is that carb kits are perhaps not the best solution ( they suck) Replacing the o-rings and seals is all that is needed in most cases. Also, for some reason, the Universe has ordained that there will be grit in the fuel system just before...

After speedo change out 10 mph off

What was wrong with the old speedo? It looks like if the speedo drive and wheel are a match then it doesn't matter what speedo you put on there. All wheel and drive pairs should be sending 2240 cable rpm to the speedo at 60mph. Have a look at this...
