If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Carburetors badly out of sync?

Took my bike in to a local shop that works on older bikes for a Wednesday appointment and was quoted 2 hours labor. This was for a carb sync and tune, wheel balancing and road worthiness inspection. Stopped by Friday around closing and asked about progress. Saw it on a stand and was told it was...

    Valve Cover Gasket

I don't know about the 850, but I found out that the bolts where the dowels are located on my 650 are longer than the rest. I initially just replaced them thinking they were all the same size and one did not torque. Also, as Ed mentioned, I used some Permatex Ultra Black on the curved portion of...

    Petcock fuel tube location

The elbow was from the original which was not only on the left, but brought the hose straight in with no looping. Can't rebuild it. The replacement has no elbow and points straight right. It will work, but ill just need to increase the length to avoid kinking or pinching.

    Petcock fuel tube location

Had no idea that the tap was press fit. Came out so easy. No O-ring nor any kind of adhesive residue. While it's very low pressure and flow, I'm surprised it never leaked.

    Petcock fuel tube location

I was unable to salvage the original petcock on my 81 GS650e, so I purchased what was called an exact match. It was exact except for one important detail. The taps were located on the right side, opposite of the original. It was easy enough to switch the vacuum tap to the left, but obviously not...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Street legal now! So easy in AZ. Brought in my CA title, filled out a short Title and Registration form, and out in 30 minutes. No wait. No emmissions test. We have lots of DMV contractors that charge a small fee so there is no waiting for 4 hours for your number to be called. Well worth it...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

I repainted and polished all the emblems and have the fender and fairings prepped and ready for paint. Already have a pint of photospectrometer color matched PPG paint and all of the decals. Since I found a new tank and dont have any tone matching experience, its almost certain that I'll farm...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Progress update. After trying to repair the idle adjuster bracket and failing, I purchased an NOS bracket from CMSNL in the Netherlands. Really good service. Like the screw, probably the last new one available anywhere. Now I have two spare screws that I cleaned up with a M5-0.5 die. They are...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

So, I decided to pull the carbs and disassemble for the third time, mainly to check the choke circuits. I think I may have found obstructions in a combination of the tiny starter tubes and more surprisingly in the float bowl passages. Almost like degraded cardboard in one of them. One pilot jet...

    Jet size differences

Thanks for the detailed explanation of the various circuits. I tried to educate myself on these circuits and somehow came away with the idea that the pilot circuit played a role in keeping the engine running during start. I did finally clean and blow out the tiny passages including using a fine...

    Jet size differences

Looks like I can get the Mikuni jets at JETS R US. Any opinions on this source?

    Jet size differences

I am referring to the main idle knob. It slips under spring tension, so It wont open the butterflies and I am unable to bench sync the carbs, which do appear to be out of sync. It had no problem starting warm. It was only cold start that was the problem and choke didn't help. Just one initial...

    Jet size differences

Found that my throttle/idle screw was stripped or the bracket thread is just too loose to hold it under spring tension. Maybe that's what has been causing hard starts?

    Jet size differences

I see exactly what you are saying. The Mikuni main jet is available, but I've only seen two places with old web site format that offer the air jets. I have a couple of the originals that survived removal after 30 years. Wondering if I could drill out the 160s to the proper size?

    Jet size differences

No mods, had to replace a few when I first tore them down for cleaning. The 110s and 160s were what was in the K&L kit. I see that these were common on other 650 models.

    Jet size differences

My 81 gs650e BS32 carb lists the following standard jet sizes vs. those that I have installed: Main jet - 97.5 -> 110 Pilot jet - 42.5 -> 42.5 Pilot air jet - 175 -> 160 I purchased a K& L kit, but if it will make a difference I will purchase some Mikuni jets. Where is the best store to purchase...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Thanks Steve, For only having had a basic knowledge about bikes to rebuilding/restoring one essentially down to the last screw, there is a certain sense of accomplishment. Especially when it roars back to life. I have always had a knack for fixing things, but this is on a different level...

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

Some good news. When starting back up right after the ride, the revs held steady. No Surging. The sofa seat doesn't quite look right on this bike, but it is comfortable on my old arse. I did order what was supposed to be a GS650E replica.

Jdub goes there 1981 650e rebuild

After a few more newbie blunders I won't even mention, I got the rest of the parts installed and torqued everything down. The Mighty MAX YB14L-A2 battery seems too tall and wide as I can't fit the side cover over it. It's hard to start when cold, and the choke really only had an effect the...
